Police have used teargas and water cannon against fuel tax protesters in Paris after violent clashes erupted on the Champs Élysées. Thousands of demonstrators from all over France massed on the famous boulevard on Saturday to express their anger at the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and his government. But what was supposed to be a peaceful protest by the gilets jaunes (yellow jackets) movement degenerated rapidly.
On one side, protesters reportedly infiltrated by far-right extremists and casseurs (rioters and hooligans) [....]
The first arrivals were angry and frustrated, feeling abandoned by their leaders and determined to make their voices heard. Those who spoke to the Observer were of all ages, held a wide range of jobs or were unemployed, and of various political persuasions. None of those who spoke to journalists – on or off the record – appeared to be looking for a fight.
“We’re here because we’ve had enough,” said Joel Mouilleseaux, 24, a student. “It’s always the same people who have to pay for the madness of others. We have to work to pay, work some more to pay some more and it’s been like that for years. It’s been like it since I was born, president after president, and now we’re saying, that’s enough.” He said he had voted for an independent candidate at the last election. “Left, right, for me it’s the same, always the same. I want to be heard, listened to and have a response.” [....]

Hundreds of arrests in Paris as ‘gilets jaunes’ protest turns violent; At least 100 people injured in street battles, with cars being torched and shops raided @ The Observer Dec. 1, 15:56 EST

This bodes so poorly for any meaningful counter to global warming...Macron's carbon tax was really a trifle compared with what is needed.
Dunno if he made it strenuously income neutral, or better yet, strenuously progressive, but clearly a preemptive allocation of the proceeds of any carbon tax (perhaps leaving the poor doubly indemnified) is a pre requisite.

I'm getting the impression that while it started out as a protest against the new gas tax, that was more a "straw that broke the camel's back" kind of reaction, and it has become more of a movement about the overall tax burden on middle and working class, i.e.
"The forgotten middle class" has taken to the country's streets. "They feel like the political elite is forgetting about them," one expert said.
and this one I posted upthread ‘People are in the red. They can’t afford to eat’
i.e., mad as hell, can't take one more tax on top of all the others...
Of course, there are the violent "agitators" now, but then isn't that often the case with long-lived street protests unless strenuously organized? (I looked at several videos of small groups engaged in such activities, and must admit some did look like the usual suspects > bored male teens learning how to burn police cars....)

Jolly, have you even thought about what you want to impose on your victims so that GW might or might not be reduced by a fraction of a degree by 2100? French socialism is taxing their working class into poverty already and this new green tax will only make the green crony capitalists richer by transferring wealth to the globalist green blob. Macron is the infant terrible of the third way neo-Marxist agenda and the French people are finally seeing this clearly and reacting to this growing threat.
French CO2 emissions per capita are only slightly greater than the world average and their emissions per unit of GDP is quite low because they get 75% of their electricity from nukes. To appease the extreme left Macron is promising to shut down 25% of their low carbon producing nukes and replace them with intermittent and unreliable wind and solar. This will be a huge windfall for the Big Green Industrial Complex and will produce mega amounts of CO2 emissions during its construction to replace the zero emission nukes. French ratepayers will be stuck with all these new costs and the cost of retiring all the nukes.
If you are one of the green Marxists who demand sane people sacrifice for your insane cause you might join the anti-capitalist mobs that are burning Paris because they can't wait for the third way globalist incremental destruction of Western Civilization.
