Our President and Justice Dept have been working on reducing the unfair sentencing of drug users that are in prison. Holder just made a big announcement of seeking applications for this process. There will be further announcements later this week. This is good news for many who are now serving unjust sentences.
The Obama Administration continued its push to reduce the number of prisoners serving long sentences as a result of the nation’s federal drug laws on Monday with an announcement by Attorney General Eric Holder describing new rules that would expand the pool of convicts eligible to apply for presidential clemency.

You can see the video that the Justice Dept has just released with AG. Holder's announcement on Hufpo. I could not find it on you tube.

I know Florida has stuffed their prisons full of young minorities under these harsh drug laws. It will also help stop the "school to prison pipeline." Under this program many will be able to go home because they are no real threat and don't need to be in prison. This is a blow to the private prison industry based in Miami.

Holder and Obama are making a gallant effort to change drugs laws in the United States. There is much more to be done.

It is a good start. Also the Monday announcement forces the media a way from the Nevada stand off. One of the six prisoners that was pardoned in December was released last week in Tallahassee. The coverage of her coming home was preempted because of the Bundy stand off. I googled her home town paper but found pictures of her release in ACLU's newsletter. I lived there when this trial was going on. There were others in that county that also had unjust out comes to their trials about the same time. This is a really big deal for communities of minorities and poor. 57% of the prisoners that are in Federal prisons are for non violent crimes. The state prisons have 17% that is for non violent crimes. That is a lot of people we have put away just to score points with racists to get votes. We should start seeing the outcome of this in the fall and that will give minorities a reason to vote. Everyone knows someone that is in jail for this in these communities.
One other point, this give governors cover to reduce their populations in state prisons of non violent crimes. The governors that cater to the teaparty types will find themselves under presser to do this for budget reasons. They will also find their efforts to keep these communities from voting fruitless. One of the things I hear when working in GOTV is: "Why should I vote? My husband or my sons are in jail. My vote don't matter because nothing is going to change." This is really a big deal.

The releases are great
Isn't amazing that Huckabee and Fox News is viewing a criminal like Bundy as a hero? These cowards were going to put women in the front to act as cannon fodder. Disgraceful. Plutocrats like Bundy have seen their wealth increase under the Socialist Obama and they still whine.

Bundy can't run his cattle over the dessert anymore. He is now isolated to his ranch. His estate will have to pay the fines and fees in the future. The courts will settle the rest of it. BLM can confiscate his cattle at the rail head if they want. This threat of loosing the cattle can force a settlement. No more food stamp program for the Bundy cattle.
The country is at it's breaking point about gun ownership of AR15s and private arsenals. I look to see major steps to change that in the future.
The changes on the war on drugs and harsh sentencing means a lot to communities in states like Florida. Like you said there is more that needs to be done.
