[....] Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team is rejecting Paul Manafort’s request to modify his terms of his confinement, because, in an explosive allegation, it says “as late as November 30, 2017, Manafort and a colleague were ghostwriting an editorial in English regarding his political work for Ukraine.”
In a court filing, Mueller’s team says that “Manafort worked on the draft with a long-time Russian colleague of Manafort’s, who is currently based in Russia and assessed to have ties to a Russian intelligence service.” [....]

would be nice to analyze *why* Manafort & others' claims are false, rather than just dismissing the op-ed as a love letter. From what I see at Wikipedia, during the 2010-2014 period, Yanukovych was pretty craftily playing the neutrality card while making some serious compromises with Russia over natural gas, Sevastopol military base and Medved/Putin's proposed new security alignment with Russia, Ukraine, France - are we surprised? Great benefit to participating in NATO games without committing to NATO, for example - I'm sure Putin liked those post-action summaries as well.
We were very fortunate in this period that fracking took away the seriousness of Russia's hold over Europe and Ukraine. Without that, the sanctions on Russia would likely have been ineffective. But Putin appears to have played his strategy wide, and we're reapiong the pain right now. Too bad the GOP doesn't have a McCarthy now when the threat's much more real and extends all through DC..
