Earth could be getting a second sun, at least temporarily.
Dr. Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, outlined the scenario to news.com.au. Betelgeuse, one of the night sky's brightest stars, is losing mass, indicating it is collapsing. It could run out of fuel and go super-nova at any time.
When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we'd see a second sun, Carter says. There may also be no night during that timeframe.
The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au.
THE END IS NIGH.

Dear Old Huffpo is getting really bad DD. They do not vet their sources of stories at all. It might as well be the National Enquirer.
On this particular subject, one of my favorite astronomers and the author of Bad Astronomy Phil Plait, also writes for Discover Magazine. Check out his evaluation of this story:

Thanks for the link.
I have seen that Betelgeuse story pop up several times since I have been online only to be thoroughly discounted within a few days.
It, and other stories like it, happen often enough that I have begun to wonder if they are being used to bury some true but less exciting news stories. Timing them close to Friday's news dumps only increases my suspicions.
Hmmm. I think I should check my supply of tinfoil.

Thanks Mage, I guess I wont have to dump all that Microsoft stock and build that shelter after all.

Does anyone know from what direction and angle the light, emanating from the collapse is coming from?
A Bible prophecy tells the “sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood”also “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Could this light overwhelm the Earth so much, as to make our Sun the lesser sun, as if darkened, diminished?
Could the light energy from this New sun’s rays, affect how our eyes see a new spectrum of light, one we are not accustomed to seeing?
The moon reflecting the light from a different angle, like a prism and the light that is prominent is Red, the appearance of blood?
I have just learned that Betelgeuse, is a red supergiant star
If this happens, a bomb shelter won’t help Richard .

Solar eclipse turns sun to darkness. Lunar eclipse creates a dramatic red moon. Falling stars powers shaken - meteors, probably one big and fast enough to create at least a sonic boom.
All of those happening within a short time span would be rather scary. Probably even the most cynical star watchers would experience a small dread of uncertainty such as that which accompanied Comet Shoemaker-Levy's sudden discovery and impact on Jupiter. I wonder how likely such a congruence is.
I recently experienced a paradigm shift in my comprehension of eclipses after seeing this photograph of a total eclipse of the sun as seen from MIR on August 11, 1999. Thought I should share it.

I'm glad you did share it.
At TPM there was a commenter who had beautiful pics of the heavens.

Resistance's quote of bible prophecy “sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood” is happening on June 15, 2011!:

You are absolutely right Resistance, a bomb shelter will not help Richard because it will not be needed at all. Please see my link above. If Betelgeuse does go supernova, all that will happen to us is harmless neutrinos passing through, just like the harmless neutrinos passing through us right now from our own sun.
