I am not a Yooper, but Ramona is.
As a Troll (someone who lives under the Big Mac bridge) I have always been a little envious of the Yooper moniker. I mean, seriously, there is nothing cool about being a Troll unless you are a CG character in a Lord Of The Rings movie.
So congratulations, Ramona, you're in the dictionary!
Da "Yoopers" up dere in da U.P., Michigan's Upper Peninsula, have hit it big with inclusion of their nickname in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the company's free online database.

Holy Wah, eh? We hit da big time! Thanks!
Confession: When they first started calling us "Yoopers" I hated it. But then I went to Da Yoopers Tourist Trap and saw the immediate value in exploiting the hell out of it and I've been doing it ever since.
I have been a Troll and I have been a Yooper. Many of my best friends are Trolls, including you, dear Flower. There's no shame in being a Troll. You're just not quite as cool, is all.

LOL....I have memories crossing that bridge before the new bridge driving a big truck in the winter. I can't imagine being a troll under that one.

Momoe, you were brave. There are several people in our own family who won't drive on the Big Mac. My sister-in-law was so afraid we had to meet her on the other side, in Mackinaw City, and I had to drive her car across. I keep telling them it's only a road. Way up high. In the sky. Ha!

It was ok as long as you didn't look down through the grate. Actually there was guys at the gate building that could drive a big truck over if the driver was too afraid to do it. It took some down shifting to get up to the top and then you had to worry with air brake pressure on the way down because of the steep grade. I was always too busy trying to keep the truck rolling on the way up and trying to hold it back on the way down to think about being scared. But then afterwards it would hit me for a few miles what I actually just done. I went up there a few times to pick up wood.

Driving a big truck across is a whole different ball game! Yes, the bridge has escorts on duty all the time and they're often used. Driving on the grates is not fun unless you're a little kid. It jiggles the car and the wheels make noise. They love that.
