Thanks for pointing this piece out, I shared it elsewhere with others that might want to see it, it's not like his great-grandfather's diary is common knowledge among historians. There are fascinating historical comparisons here. Everyone on this site should read it, very thought-provoking--especially for ironies like: Lincoln calling for 75,000 volunteers to put down southern "insurrection" and him being part of a Massachusetts regiment that called themselves "The Minutemen" after their forbears at Lexington and Concord who were themselves insurrectionists against a government.
