The ghost of New York's immigrant sweatshop is alive and well in the nail salon industry. Read this shocking NYT expose by Sarah Maslin Nir, a mutual friend of Michael M. and me...
The New York Times interviewed more than 150 nail salon workers and owners, in four languages, and found that a vast majority of workers are paid below minimum wage; sometimes they are not even paid. Workers endure all manner of humiliation, including having their tips docked as punishment for minor transgressions, constant video monitoring by owners, even physical abuse. Employers are rarely punished for labor and other violations.

Chilling article. I've always wondered about these places. Since I'm not the manicure or pedicure type I've never been in one but I've been past plenty of them in the south. Always packed. I hope this brings some awareness to the lives of the women who work in them. I wonder if they're able to keep their tips? Sounds like even that is taken from them.

I am licensed manicurist I went to school so I could do this in retirement but it is a bad work environment in states that are lax. Fake nails are going out of fashion and natural nails with polish or lacquer is the current trend. You can only wear artificial nails for a few years before you run into problems. Then it is time to let your hands rest from it even if you haven't any problems.
I can tell you that in some state it is as bad as that article. They are not closely regulating. Even worse they are using solvent for the powder that is not allowed anymore in this country. The South East Asians are bad about that. They also expect you to work for nothing. Also they don't always sterilize like they should. You can pick up some fungus that takes a while to get rid off. I saw some really bad cases of it. Florida is very lax at inspections so there are South East Asian shops around here. The best place to get your peti and manies done is in a full service beauty shop in your neighborhood. You want to see that license hanging on the wall. You will also pay more but they will take good care of you.
