"(Republicans) don’t get news from the outside world, because they get their information from partisan sources that simply don’t report inconvenient facts. They don’t face adult supervision, because in a polarized political environment there are few competitive races.
So they’re increasingly inward-looking, engaged in ever more outlandish efforts to demonstrate their loyalty to the tribe. Their partisanship isn’t about issues, although the party remains committed to cutting taxes on the rich and punishing the poor; it’s about asserting the dominance of the in-group and punishing outsiders...."

Republicans feel that only they can be in charge as noted by Bouie in the NYT

Trump and Republicans spread the lie that the vote was rigged
People believed them
Now they want another review because people believe the vote was rigged

If this continues, and there is no reason to believe Republican tribalism, ever expanding 'cons by slick trash like Cruz and the 121, total aversion to facts and rationality by 'The Base' and conspiracy believing, stoking of hate and more and more extremism will end ... the Republicans will, if they hold Congress, and/or enough corrupt state legislatures, do exactly what Trump wants this election, just throw out Electoral College votes, throw out Democratic won state totals, and on some future Jan 6 just declare their new Trump president.

This is an attempted coup
As you note, this may just be Act 1

.. and Amy Coney Barrett, Clarence, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are going to stop them?
It's the endgame, the last step to gaming an obsolete slaver coddling Constitution, written only with approval ot the enslavers in order to protect their bottom lines, which is also why they pushed 'revolution and independence' in the first place.

This is not normal
AOC pushing Moderates to take up more Progressive policies is normal
Putting up challenges to Congressional leadership is normal
Refusing to accept the results of an election, filing 61 court case, and slowing certification of the Electoral Colleges is not normal.
All this is happening in one election cycle.
This is not both sides do it
Republicans do not believe in democracy

I'd want both a radiologist and a pulmonologist reading the CXR.
In the future the coal mining industry will decide which AI device is able to read a CXR.

Seriously, Dems must ditch the Senate filibuster to get big projects, law and policy passed.
If Supreme Court justices (done for first time under Trump/McConnell) can be confirmed with 51 votes, then laws and programs should too.
The filibuster is loved by the GOP because they have no policy but cutting taxes on the rich and shredding the safety net. Both can be done filibuster exempt, with 'budget reconciliation', as used to pass their last tax 1 1/2 trillion cuts under Trump.
Added plus, the GOP can block any progressive legislation with 40 votes, showing 'gov't doesn't work'.
Unfortunately, they probably won't ditch the filibuster, Josh at TPM. paywall, Josh - "Dems will get to have votes on 'big stuff'....." ...at least Dems can raise taxes and use 'budget reconciliation' to fund projects/policy under existing law.

But we're 1 Senator away from losing the majority. At which point they can use whatever we set up.
by PeraclesPlease on Wed, 01/06/2021 - 9:44am
They would need the House, Senate and White House, and if they get that, they can accomplish their sole missions, pack the courts, and cut taxes on the rich and eviscerate the safety net with budget reconciliation.
Republicans have no motivation or experience to do anything else. New gov't programs, initiatives, legislation etc. are the last thing they want to do, the goal is to stop Dems from doing that, as with ACA.
If the GOP wanted to get rid of the legislative filibuster they would already have done it. It is their bulwark to disable Dems and hobble the federal gov't from progressive legislative programs and laws.
by NCD on Wed, 01/06/2021 - 12:05pm
With Senate control, they can use Senate rules to cause a lot of trouble.
