Five months after the long winter of Middle East repression was broken by the unexpected Arab Spring that saw the rapid overthrow of long-entrenched rulers in Tunisia and Egypt and uprisings in Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria, the initial giddiness and euphoria have dissipated.

Such raw emotions, after all, can only be sustained for so long before the mundane and complicated realities of everyday life reassert themselves. Now those realities will be staring the leaders of the Group of 8 in the face in Deauville, France, as rudely and as stolidly as if they were seated at the conference tables....

Reporting from Deauville, France, and Washington—
President Obama pressed world powers at an international summit Thursday to swiftly aid the stricken economies of Egypt and Tunisia, but at the same time he faced renewed pressure from European allies to increase the U.S. military role in Libya.

Obama warned international leaders that unless they help create jobs and restart economic growth, the postrevolutionary governments in Cairo and Tunis could collapse, dashing hopes for the so-called Arab Spring.

European officials at the meeting of the Group of 8 industrialized countries said they shared Obama's goals, but many shied away from specific pledges of aid. They are to issue a public statement Friday outlining their plans....

Events: Heavy gunfire is occuring around the area of the U.S. Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre. All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.

Actions to take:

Avoid the area;

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
