Before Covid, these cities were "America's gildest cities."
Covid shut down all but essential work so that the cities are now filled with people who can't or won't leave. I can say that downtown SF, always filled with strange people, suddenly had a bit of an old west vibration. I was working a job there and was struck by how harsh the roughness of its occupants was - it felt like the whole city was now homeless. Unlike Seattle or Portland, SF was aware of how screwed up it can be and is able to deal with it.
On the other hand, people were really friendly. Not what you would expect from such a rough exterior. Once industry is started up again like it was before Covid, we will see what superstar cities are like. California lost a full half percentage point of population in 2020 - My wild guess is that a considerable amount of people won't return.
