White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan says al-Qaida is on a “on a steady slide” after the death of al-Qaida’s latest second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, in Pakistan.
Brennan told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it’s a “huge blow” in the first official White House comment since Rahman’s reported killing by CIA drone strike in Pakistan’s tribal areas last week.....

An American official said that a strike by the Central Intelligence Agency on Aug. 22 killed Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, a Libyan who in the last year had taken over as Al Qaeda’s top operational planner.

Usta' be, it was the perpetually and repeatedly neutralized third in command whose death was the subject of our ongoing triumphalism.
The removal of 'Sama, of course, has just bumped every function up a notch.
Now it's acturarially unsound to be number 2.
