Amazon likes to think of its marketplace as a merchant meritocracy where the best products get the best reviews by virtue of quality and honest consumer feedback, But the vast size of the platform, coupled with a ferocious competition among sellers to get higher product rankings, has spawned a problem: A proliferation of fake reviews.
Comments
It seems to me this was the fundamental error that many made with the internet. The theory was that we would create these open platforms that gave everybody a voice and the best and brightest ideas would come out on top. For a brief time that seemed to be so but soon the scammers gained a footing and kept increasing their influence. Now conspiracy theories, fake news, and emotionally manipulative topics make up at least a very significant minority the internet content.

Those that are selling something know there is money to be made in manipulating emotions.
The savviest way to achieve this, though (getting an emotional rise out of people and drawing their interest) with a populace that is cynical and sophisticated about the simpler advertising methods, like most Americans are, is to amplify the extreme of both sides. I.E., this product was great, and this product sucked, with personal testimonials. So much so that when I try to use reviews when buying something or looking for a service, I go for the ones who are trying to be excessively fair and go into detail about what the liked and what they didn't like and what might be good about it for others and what might be bad. Who is going to pay anyone to do that, hah?
One thing that amazes me is that the Russian trolls knew this: go for all outrage all the time or passionate tribe supporter all the time.

The whiny Federalist link says "a one star review said book was worst ever". There is only one, one star review of the book at it's Amazon page, and it doesn't say "this is the worst book ever".
The reviews on this book are almost all 5 star, 30 or so out of 35, and the 5 star reviews are all to the last one, the equivalent of "this is the best book ever." Who is gaming Amazon reviews here?
Yeah, we already knew Republicans were self righteous crybabies.

It's the "victims of a liberal conspiracy far too often" syndrome where their lying eyes give them cognitive dissonance. It's a new kind of algebra where "Jeff Bezos buys Washington Post" + "polemic we like isn't being discussed everyday on MSNBC" = "must be the fault of a rigged system at Amazon." Funny that they can't just see rigging a system for monetary gain, there always has to be an ideology at play. It's almost like they think like communists.

Yeah, exactly.
Somebody at the Federalist looks like they gamed the reviews.
BUT ITS OK if Republicans do it! Cuz 60's librul hippies chucked out Murican values and made 'em do it!

Bill Kristol pointing out an example of exactly what you are talking about:
Reminds me of how the hyperbole technique was already being used by the right wing culture warriors before Trump.

I'm guessing that controversial political books represent about .001% of Amazon's $232 billion annual earnings, so I really doubt they care. Fake negative reviews of books can be a problem for some political authors (ahem), but Amazon is surely much more concerned with fake positive reviews by sellers of all merchandise, which affect a much vaster market.

You are so naive. You can't even see Bezos' socialist plan to bring down America after he bought The Washington Post? Those negative reviews you had trouble with, don't you realize that is a plot to make sure your income stops at a certain level?

Is Bezos the Yin to Andrew's Yang? Maximum Basic Income?

If so, they've been very successful!

@realDonaldTrump I suggested the topic to my agent, but she said that publishers generally look for books to run at least 200 pages, and your GREAT plan takes about 4 sentences, give or take a few ungrammatical clauses. I might be able to get it up to a page and a half with a lot of filler and some humorous digressions.
Also, the market for books on the 1848 Guadalupe Treaty is completely saturated. But thanks for the suggestion.
