As the culture war between gay rights and religious liberty rages, conservatives are livid that the president renominated Chai Feldblum at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

I find this darkly funny in a way: of you are a socially conservative Republican do you want so badly to take down one of your adversaries that you are willing to risk doing your cause more harm than good in the process?
I worked with Chai on the ADA. She is quite a dynamo and very sharp. And she indeed played a critical role in the passage of that legislation, against long odds. It had to be approved by four House committees. It is rare that any bill referred to that many committees becomes law. There was a fierce internal fight within the Bush 41 Administration to arrive at its ultimately favorable stance on the bill. Those with AIDS and who are HIV positive are included in the definition of people with disabilities under that law.
