No, I think Daily Beast is on the right track, got it right, it's PoPoMo twist on Dynasty does the Ascot horsey thing. The designers are doing it with irony intended-ramping it up to camp- and the Trump ladies are just going along because those was the choices given and they want to be with it. For example, look at how wacky cartoonish Ivanka's hat really is. That was for the day wear.
The evening wear on the other hand, was classic, not cartoonish. Except nobody told Tiffany it would not be appropriate to wear the red dress Rhett made Scarlett O'Hara wear to Melanie's party to show what a harlot she was. Melania trying to be Jackie K, and other ladies got a chance to do the Wallis Simpson/Duchess of Windsor thing.

Harlots 'R Us.
So what's up w Don's balloon pants? Easier to get over his bone spurs? Covers his ankle cuffs?

Seriously! All his pants are like that! You would think someone would back up and take a good look and start all over again! Ok. He’s fat. There are ways to look better when you are fat, and ways to not look like a slob. He manages to look like a self-conscious fat slob all at once, and it is (somewhat) weird that he does, considering his resources. But he always looks like this.
Ah, chacon á son goût

He's fat, but what's he hiding around his ankles? You could fit those pants over a small cast - or manacles or a radio transmitter or some parasite leeching onto his bloodstream or a tiny koala trying to make it to his kneecaps or an alien tramsmitting back to Mars (space force?) - or a low-hanging colostomy bag - what's he git stashed down there?

it's catnip for cartoonists, here's "blind tentmaker tailor" (they'll all be drawing him with tube legs from now on, in addition to the tiny hands):

The Trumps and the Death of Fashion Diplomacy
White-tie faux pas? Hat tricks? It’s time we stopped expecting the Trumps to play by any of the old rules, our fashion critic writes.

Heavy signalling and reading the tea leaves - guy with more money than fashion sense, looks funny in a tux, brings the family where alone would be more tasteful -- where have I seen this before?
