American food policy has long been rife with head-scratching illogic. We spend billions every year on farm subsidies, many of which help wealthy commercial operations to plant more crops than we need. The glut depresses world crop prices, harming farmers in developing countries. Meanwhile, millions of Americans live tenuously close to hunger, which is barely kept at bay by a food stamp program that gives most beneficiaries just a little more than $4 a day.So it’s almost too absurd to believe that House Republicans are asking for a farm bill that would make all of these problems worse. For the putative purpose of balancing the country’s books, the measures that the House Republican caucus is pushing for in negotiations with the Senate, as Congress attempts to pass a long-stalled extension of the farm bill, would cut back the meager aid to our country’s most vulnerable and use the proceeds to continue fattening up a small number of wealthy American farmers.

Thanks Donal for this read.
When I drove to the farm Saturday, I had to drive to the coast through what was farms when I moved here and is now gated communities of large houses. They had nice streets, side walks and the county was keeping the weeds cut in the public areas and streets clean. I am only a few miles away in the same town and they are not even filling the pot holes in my neighborhood. It is the total self centered entitlement these people have and then dare to complain about entitlements for the poor. We get told there is no money to improve a stop light situation but there is money to keep up with things in the upper middle class neighborhoods. It is an attitude even at the local level.
My two older college grandkids came home yesterday to tell me about a Walmart store in Ohio asking other employees to help with food donations for their less fortunate coworkers. There is an organized effort to keep Walmart viral because people want minimum wage raised These young adults are very much aware of what is going on and don't like it. Access to good nutrition is a human right along with health care and they seem to know it is a political issue.. The first thing they did was send a email to Rubio and Vern Buchanan after I challenged them to not just complain but take action.
I have seen recently many blogs on the subject of GMO's, and corporate farming. It wasn't being discussed that much a few years ago. A few days ago I read a blog about how fat people are because of SNAP. Also there is always a few"Mad Max" gloom and doom comments every time. Crazy Prep'ers influence there from the libertarians/John Birchers. We certainly need to raise the bar on our FDA regulations.
FWIW, I think the GOP's meanness is going to back fire. Even with all their gerrymandering. that might not save them. A chunk of the middle class is hurting not just the chronic poor.
