I learned a lot this week.

(I most probably relearned it, but who cares?)

I listened to a couple of hours of Heather Cox Richardson, a professor at Boston College render a speech associated to her new book entitled: To Make Men Free, A History Of The Republican Party.

She admits to being a liberal. There is nothing to hide really.

There are many points she makes in this video but a couple of these points really got to me.

    http://www.c-span.org/video/?324575-1/discussion-history-republican-party

There was a first Abraham Lincoln.

Evidently Abe was a distant cousin of Boone.

This relative somehow came under the tutelage of Daniel Boone of all people.

Through Daniel Boone’s mentoring; this older Abe ended up going west from Virginia and purchased land in Kentucky.

This Old Abe purchased this new land and ended up making a mint.

Well Old Abe became rich, seriously rich and he had three children.

Virginia laws prevailed at this time.

But due to Primogeniture, his first son received his total estate.

The other two boys received NOTHING.

Now there was Thomas Lincoln and another Lincoln with nothing; in Kentucky and without means except for labor that was produced from the sweat of their own brows.

Thomas, who must have been really weird, named his son after his father; and thus we find Abraham Lincoln II.

I do not recall this link to Abe and Daniel Boone; but I have read much about the poverty of this President from his early beginnings at all.

Take the time to listen to this full presentation given by this wonderful Professor.

Everybody seems to blame Grant and his Administration for corruption.

The corruption did nothing but accelerate over the decades following the end of Reconstruction; making the horrors of Reconstruction look like minor misdemeanors.

Then, out of nowhere, and by accident we find Teddy Roosevelt. (Read Mike W’s tome sometime, this is good stuff and Teddy was no socialist and….) But life can be easy, just compare Taft to Teddy for chrissakes!

And this great professor noted what a wonderful President of the United States of America we found in Ike.

I have not read the book.

But the next President who attempted to keep the union was Nixon.

    I know, I know.

I grew up hating Nixon, but as I look back all of the great changes in the US of A including SS reform and the newly established EPA and actual aid to Unions and ….

Look, when I review what was to come, Nixon was not that bad. Look at Bush and look at the damage that a Cruz or a Rubio or a....oh who cares. List all candidates from this lost party that I refer to as repubs. ha

OOOOOOOOOOOh I do not even wish to get into this. Hahahahah

    JEFFERSON

I had nothing else to do, so I watched a couple hours about Jefferson (& Lincoln) actually.

    http://www.c-span.org/video/?322881-1/discussion-thomas-jeffersons-union

Well, it turns out that all four of the major candidates for President of the United States of America in 1860, called for THE UNION AT ALL COSTS in their campaign propaganda.

Even Jefferson Davis, who was only a Senator at the time with no campaign called for THE UNION.

What this dialog says to me is that the South had more to lose without a Union than the North.

The real issue of that time concerned the spread of slavery; and the right to take your 'property' anywhere you wished. And the fact that there was an issue, as there is now concerning property rights vs. human rights.

Whence came the Copperheads from the North.

SCREW EM. THEY WANT SLAVES, WELL FINE FOR THEM.

JUST KEEP THEM THE HELL OUT OF THE NEW ORDER, THE NEW USA WITHOUT THESE BASTARDS.

    You see?

Now on the Southern side, let us suppose that at the age of three, some Black woman is your nanny.

And you have been born in Virginia and the year is 1668 or 1768 or 1858?

THERE IT IS. THERE IS YOUR UNIVERSE.

    I did not do this!

Oh and all the while legislatures in the North, including Illinois and Ohio and a number of other states enacted laws against Negroes, free or not, from entering your state.

    CONTEXT.

I enjoyed these two rants of sort.

It is five hours of work.

To even hear these folks, these educated folks takes time.

    But I learned much.

And it was Mike W who attempted to get us to listen.

I just never really realized (or I forgot because I am old and….hahahahaha) certain 'facts' that I do not recall.

    Check on CSPAN sometime.

Skip the repubs just sending out (through their CSPACS) BULLSHITE.

The University of Virginia (established by Jefferson) is not a  propaganda mechanism.

    FINAL

Jefferson hated slavery. As I have written some five years ago? Jefferson wished to abolish slavery and he attempted to do so in Virginia as he was a legislator some twenty different times; with no success.

Of course Jefferson wished to send all the Blacks back to Africa.

He ended up apologizing on the basis of history and expressing his own eschewed idea of white supremacy.

Lincoln (my hero) hated slavery but was more than on board for white supremacy, YET Lincoln changed. Even Honest Abe wished to send all African-Americans back to Africa at some time during his life.

Jefferson had sex with his own slave and propagated even more slaves thereby. At least he freed his own children per his  legal will.

I have written before about how Lincoln changed his mind; he evolved and Jefferson devolved.

But without Jefferson, we WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD LINCOLN.

    This weekend got to me.

This is good stuff, this is good discussion, this is good study.

    (I am stuck doing this in fits and starts. I will be back}

    Comments

I have the links bookmarked.  I have lots to do tonight in the kitchen and will listen to them as I work.  I just put the lab top on the counter, so it is like having a Tv in the kitchen.  I watch Hallmark movies that way. I will get back with you and tell you what I have learned.

I kept the sound on and went about my business, although I have less 'business' to do than you. hahahaha

And I just listened to both CSPAN presentations a few times over the weekend.

It is hard for me to concentrate and I need a few times going through the info in order to 'get it'.

I do know this, these types of videos are more interesting than the Jersey Girls. hahahah

    Really?

WE ARE ALL GOING TO HELL

    Who told you that?

"And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it".

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing,

I do like the melody of the song by the Tiger Lillies though.

Resistance, it is nine o'clock in the midwest?

I love Tiger Lilies of course, this has got to be the third? time I have played them.

I get so lost Resistance. I really do. But you know that.

But I love OUR history. I really do love Jefferson and Lincoln.

These two folks provided us with hope so many decades ago.

Compare our history to all the nations extent upon the earth today.

All men are created equal and they are endowed....

    Hell...

All the sins of the other nations combined do not come close to ours. We have committed less. But we must try harder.

I would like US to do better.

But I really do love this country and I love this nation's history and as far as I am concerned, our history demonstrates the best that humanity might ever attain.

    I really do believe this.

But I aint never, ever going to ignore its failings.

We are a supposed democracy and that means we must acknowledge that the idiots might rule and that the elite must rule and....all according to the masses' wishes.

    Not the masters' wishes.

    But the masses' wishes.

And advertising is a strong initiative for sure.

I aint given up and I am sure you aint given up.

    You have a nice Easter!

Jefferson had an objection to slavery in one draft of the Declaration of Independence. The draft was rejected by Georgia and South Carolina.

    http://www.vindicatingthefounders.com/library/jeffersons-draft.html

However, Jefferson also had a dark side when it came to the actual practice of slavery.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/01/opinion/the-real-thomas-jefferson.html...

And Franklin was there to edit.

    Well put.

Of course old Tom kind of got older and meaner and more of a slave owner.

    Goooooooooooood point!

    Well Said.

And to this day, Georgia and South Carolina are not my favorite states.

    hahahah

i made an edit to note the other side of Jefferson

I think I read this link three years ago?

    Good link.

Of course, and I am hardly the first to recognize this dichotomy in this man's mind, hell it is the dichotomy in the mind of this country.

I am enamored by these new textbooks propagated by idiots and propagandists in Texas and elsewhere that would make Tom a saint and evolution some damn guesswork by so-called scientists whilst 'they' attempt to ignore real history and real science in favor of pure bullshite.

    hahahahah

Yet, I still love Jefferson, for reasons already written.

If we choose to only look at the bright side of Tom and only the bright side of America, we shall miss the real Tom and the real America.

    Well put.

It is sad that many no little history at all. a public unaware of history can be led in any direction.

Yet, I still love Jefferson, for reasons already written.

So many do, and I can't ignore his important role in founding our nation. Many "moral absolutists" like to believe that morals are morals are morals, but if that is the case, then surely Jefferson was a worse person than either Bush or Obama, since neither of them every owned slaves?

    What do you mean?

All the working class became enslaved years ago, now the slaves have to provide for themselves.
