G.O.P. Alarmed by Trump’s Comments on Extremist Group, Fearing a Drag on the Party

For the second time in two weeks, Republicans distanced themselves from the president, expressing unease about his failure to disavow a right-wing organization linked with white supremacy and acts of violence.

[....] On Wednesday, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, called it “unacceptable not to condemn white supremacists,” without criticizing Mr. Trump by name, while Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said the president should “make it clear Proud Boys is a racist organization antithetical to American ideals.” [....]

Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, a veteran Republican lawmaker and a Native American, said in an interview that Mr. Trump should denounce the Proud Boys and other extremist groups in clear language. “All he has to say is, ‘There’s no place for racial intolerance in this country,’ and be very forceful about it,” Mr. Cole said.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, one of two Black Republicans in Congress, suggested that perhaps Mr. Trump “misspoke” and urged him to fix his error. But Mr. Scott also allowed, “If he doesn’t correct it, I guess he didn’t misspeak.”

Mr. Trump, in a brief encounter with reporters Wednesday afternoon, tried to contain the damage while stopping well short of a full reversal of his stance. Reprising a ploy familiar from past controversies, Mr. Trump insisted he did not know anything about the group, though he made no suggestion to that effect during the debate [....]

Still, there was no sign of a full Republican retreat from Mr. Trump, who throughout his term has been treated by most of his party as all but above reproach. Even those who dissented with Mr. Trump on Wednesday did not directly rebuke him, a longstanding approach that spares them blowback from conservative voters and the president himself.

Some officials accused the news media of clinging to an irrelevant issue. “How many times does he have to say it if the question is, ‘Would you denounce it’ and the answer is yes?” said Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the House minority leader. “He did that.” [....]

Republicans to Trump: Condemn white supremacy now

Senate Republicans spent much of Wednesday pressing President Donald Trump to denounce white supremacy, with few in the GOP willing to explicitly defend his refusal to do so during Tuesday’s presidential debate [....]

Trump attempted to clean up his remarks Wednesday afternoon after the barrage of criticism, saying he did not know who the Proud Boys are but that “they need to stand down.” However, it was far from the clear denunciation members of his party had been seeking.

In a series of interviews and public statements Wednesday, Senate Republicans pushed Trump to clarify his comments, with party leaders and the rank-and-file eager to put distance between themselves and the president’s stance.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that he shared the same views as Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the only black GOP senator, who urged the president to correct his comments.

“He said it was unacceptable not to condemn white supremacy,” McConnell said. “And so, I do so in the strongest possible way.” Scott on Wednesday suggested the president may have misspoken but added: “If he doesn't correct it — I guess he didn't misspeak.”

GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, also aligned himself with his South Carolina colleague, tweeting that he agrees with "President Trump needing to make it clear Proud Boys is a racist organization antithetical to American ideals.”

The president's refusal to rebuke hate groups once again dragged his history of racist remarks back into the national spotlight, creating another unwelcome headache for Senate Republicans as they try to keep their majority in November.[....]

But McConnell said Trump’s performance in the debate wouldn’t hurt his efforts to keep the Senate: “I don’t know of any of my colleagues who will have problems as a result of that.”

Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) said Wednesday that Trump seemed to believe he'd already condemned white supremacy: "In his mind he did." But Thune prodded Trump to “clear it up.”

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said Trump should “unequivocally condemn white supremacy,” while Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) , a frequent critic of the president, responded that "of course" Trump should have denounced white supremacists.

Other GOP senators did not criticize Trump directly, but instead reiterated their own personal denunciation of white supremacy.

“I condemn white supremacy, all extremist groups. I think that all of these groups are equal, and I condemn them on the strongest terms and we need to remain one nation under God," said Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.).

Some GOP lawmakers came to Trump’s defense.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Sen Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.), argued that the president said recently he would designate the KKK a terrorist organization [....]

and then there's the surrogates stuck trying to spin the impossible spin:

[...] Christie, who along with ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, helped prep Trump for the debate, said that Trump needed to quickly go out and clear up any confusion on the matter.

“The way to do that is the next opportunity the president has to clarify that answer because folks like you and others are confused by it, then he should do that,” Christie said.

Alyssa Farah, the White House communications director, meanwhile told Fox News that "I don't think that there is anything to clarify" from Trump's comments the night before. "He's told them to stand back," she said, pointing to the president's efforts to tamp down violence in cities across the country. [....]

Other observers typically sympathetic to the president seemed to recognize the potential ramifications of Trump’s debate response. “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade said Trump “ruined the biggest layup in the history of debates” and, like Christie, urged the president to make amends.

“That’s like [asking] ‘are you against evil?,'” Kilmeade said. “Why the president didn’t just knock that out of the park, I’m not sure.” [....]

It's like this: you had umpteen times to go do the "it's time for you to resign" thing and then you also coulda voted for impeachment and you would then have had a President Pence to work with.....BUT NO....lily livered ascared of how a few swings would react to a President Pence whilst having a martyr Trump and Trump fans out there calling into Fox News every day.

Never Trumpers are right, they let Trump sabotage their party. And right when it should have been building other bridges, other coalitions away from ye olde style Pence Christian conservative. If you look at it from their point of view, they are so screwed now until he dies, forever dealing with insane populist fever dreams all focused on the popularity of one invented teevee program businessman character. There's nobody else out there that could replace him for the large contingenet that are now diehard fans, and the fans have turned off a lot of other demographics they could go after. Wrong populist took over their party at exactly the wrong time, when there was boiling resentment by a significant number of elites (right and left) looking down on them.

GOP senators pan debate: 'S---show,' 'awful,' 'embarrassment'

Republican senators, one after the other on Wednesday, panned the first presidential debate between President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

They appeared exasperated by the chaotic, roughly two-hour clash that was marked by near constant crosstalk and personal attacks. And they argued more more focus should be put on policy when the two candidates meet again next month.

"It was awful," Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) told reporters.

Asked what she thought about the debate Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) paused for a moment, before responding: "It was exhausting."

Other GOP senators were more direct in their criticism with Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) calling it an "embarrassment" and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) calling it a "shitshow."

"It was the least educational debate of any presidential debate I've ever seen," said Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who is in a tough reelection fight.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) compared the debate to a "brawl," while Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) urged Trump to "restrain himself a little" during the next debate.

As we saw with his QAnon response, he refuses to say anything negative about people who express support for his leadership, no matter how hideous or dangerous their beliefs.

ANYONE THAT'S A FAN. That's all it is. Calling him a racist or a Nazi is getting it wrong. He is Trump. Trump is the best ideology there is. Those who see that, he will support back, he doesn't care what skin color they have or how crazy they are. Neatly ties in with the anti-immigrant thing that fueled his rise, where he makes immigrants into people who hate us and want to take us over and change us rather than desperately trying to get a part of the American dream. (A divide that conveniently crosses party lines!)

GOP in general have already decided that the talking points for low info. voter is that electing Joe is the same as electing Ocasio-Cortez, so she's taken care of. So Omar is a good alternative. Irony is that him and his gang attacking her will strengthen support for her among those who might be wavering because of her strident ineptitude at messaging.

Interestingly, Trump doesn't participate in that old meme much? None of that "watch out Mr. and Mrs. America, the lefty libs are coming for your pocketbook and your freedom". It's always all about him--do you love me or don't you?--and in the past, "MAGA", whatever that means at that particular moment. And there's not much great at the moment to brag about...THOUGH I noted this scuttlebutt that he is pushing to give Americans more money than McConnell and gang want to. If it happens, I imagine it's because he clearly wants to take major credit in his campaigning.

It might be uncomfortable but the Proud Boys are what most white guys in the GOP are like.

The rational end of conservatism is filled with people like Niall Ferguson or Jordan Peterson, who are originally from other countries. American conservatism is generally a toxic force.

I don't agree. For example, most of the Never Trumpers still say they are proudly conservative. Their ads are full of testimonials from average guys who say they are conservative but sorry they voted for Trump. And someone like Mitt Romney is like a Proud Boy? Go back to the GOP Primary debates and they are all vehemently anti-Trump-proud-boy-lke tactics.Many GOP voters who went for him were just glad to see someone challenge the establishment, and many who didn't vote from him in the primary ended up voting for him because they feared Hillary more.

I wouldn't guarantee that any of those people are voting Dem down ticket, they still call themselves conservative. Conservative is not the same as radical right wing activists. As a matter of fact before conservative shock jock radio, conservative usually meant conservative in thought and deed as in law and order and don't upset the apple cart.

A lot of middle aged white men just don't think liberals are going to help their goals in life and they think the Democratic party is too liberal.

Well generally speaking that might be true, although younger men are more complicated. Feminism also seems to have evolved with the Squad, Kamala Harris, etc. These women are much more confident and have a loyalty to the larger group they are from and groups they are in solidarity with, as opposed to white feminists of old who just had the goal of reducing the power of men generally.

Beyond Trump and Biden is the spectre of a very, very different cultural and political world once the Baby Boomer moon has set. The millennial and likely the Z generation even more isn't simply the opposite of the Boomer and X generations but something else entirely.

Senate Republicans just blocked a unanimous vote on a resolution condemning white supremacy. It passed the House unanimously. They said that after 9 months of the legislation languishing that the committees of jurisdiction needed to look at it and consider their “equities.”
