Obama is leaving the campaign trail for two days to go to Hawaii because his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, is gravely ill. To respect the family's privacy, they're not releasing any information, but the implication is that she's near death. Ms. Dunham helped to raise Obama, and they were very close. With his mother having passed away, this must be very difficult for him, especially at this time. I hope that she recovers and lives to see her grandson become President.

Thanks to demosaur for passing on the information. Sorry that the chat was cut short. I lost my internet connection suddenly.

I just saw this on the news too. I really hope she pulls through at least to the election.

stillidealistic at TPM came up with the idea of sending Mrs. Dunham messages of hope and appreciation, so I've set up a website for voice messages at: www.thankyoututu.com. No way to know whether these messages will ever reach Mrs. Dunham or whether she would be able to listen to them... but it feels good to say something, anyway.

I saw an update at Yahoo on her health condition, including some comments from her brother, Obama's 83-year-old uncle, today. Apparently she broke her hip, which was why she was in the hospital.

I saw that too. I thought that I posted it as an update, but I guess not. I hope that means that it's not life threatening.

Me too, fervently. And I meant to say "his grand-uncle".
