Who cares ?
The debate over the Russian proposal for Syria reminds me of a season in the early 80s. With a week to go the Yankees were as usual in the lead. But during that week they "mailed in" their performances and they didn't finally clinch until the last weekend.

Some people are saying you backed into the pennant

They'll be saying that from second place.

Some care because they're so used to being diehard fans of professional sports teams that they don't know anything else?
Those type of fans never have a satisfying explanation for me about what they get when they "win." Actually, what are the benefits? They get to not look stupid for spending so much emotional energy and time on a for-profit entertainment corporation? They get to lord it over fans of other teams? They learn to worship other people as heroes for their handling of a ball, or for their ability to run or "fight"? Their season tickets increase in value? Their team gets to go to Disney World? What, what do they really get when they win? It makes them proud? Pride in a team they have to pay to see is the reward? Wazzit? What good does "winning" do them?
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.

The golf course lies so near the mill
That almost every day
The children working at the looms
Can see the men at play.
