Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones Dies

    Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, 58, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress and a vocal critic of the Iraq War, died at 6:12 p.m. tonight, according to an official at Cleveland Clinic.

    Initial press reports erroneously reported Tubbs Jones died earlier in the day. In fact, her condition deteriorated throughout the day after she was found unconscious in her car yesterday, having suffered a brain hemorrhage.

    She was born Sept. 10, 1943, in Cleveland. In 1974, she earned her doctoral degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. She worked her way up as a judge in Ohio's courts system, running unsuccessfully for the Supreme Court of Ohio and serving as Cuyahoga County Prosecutor until 1999, when she was sworn in as Ohio's 11th District Congresswoman.
