Karl Rove, one of the greatest political minds of our time, had this to say about Sarah Palin, one of the greatest helicopter moose hunters of our time:

There are high standards that the American people have for it [the presidency] and they require a certain level of gravitas, and they want to look at the candidate and say 'that candidate is doing things that gives me confidence that they are up to the most demanding job in the world.'"

 Well, at first I thought:

What do those dry roux packets I purchase at the grocery store during the holidays have to do with running for POTUS?

Then I thought:

What the hell does an apple falling on Newton’s head have to do with running for POTUS?

Well, after I looked up POTUS again just to make sure I decided to look up gravitas because I thought that maybe, the brightest political thinker of our time surely would not use a Roman word for cemeteries in the context of Sarah Palin without thinking it all through and stuff.

Gravitas was one of the Roman virtues, along with pietas, dignitas and virtus. It may be translated variously as weight, seriousness, dignity, or importance, and connotes a certain substance or depth of personality.

Well how do you like them apples? I mean gravitas has little to do with graveyards or gravy or gravity.

These geniuses are hard to follow without having Wiki close to one’s fingertips!

Rove was telling us that running around (or flying around) and killing moose (or is it mooses? I will Wiki that up and get back to you’all) from a helicopter with air to earth missiles on the Discovery Channel is no way to begin a run for President!

Well, Sarah was not just going to take this type of criticism lying down on a helicopter with moose in her sights:

Palin became testy when I asked her about the books I heard she had been reading. “I’ve been reading since I was a little girl,” she snapped. “And my mom is standing 15 feet away from me, and I should put her on the phone with you right now so she can tell you. That’s what happens when you grow up in a house full of teachers — you read; and I always have. Just because — and,” she continued, though in a less blistering tone, “I don’t want to come across sounding caustic or annoyed by this issue: because of one roll-of-the-eye answer to a question I gave, I’m still dealing with this,” she said, referring to her interview with Katie Couric. “There’s nothing different today than there was in the last 43 years of my life since I first started reading. I continue to read all that I can get my hands on — and reading biographies of, yes, Thatcher for instance, and of course Reagan and the John Adams letters, and I’m just thinking of a couple that are on my bedside, I go back to C.S. Lewis for inspiration, there’s such a variety, because books have always been important in my life.” She went on: “I’m reading [the conservative radio host] Mark Levin’s book; I’ll get ahold of Glenn Beck’s new book — and now because I’m opening up,” she finished warily, “I’m afraid I’m going to get reporters saying, Oh, she only reads books by Glenn Beck.”

I explained to Palin that in my view, at least, this line of inquiry wasn’t gratuitous — that questions did in fact linger about her “gravitas gap.”

(Sometimes this stuff gets awfully complicated, putting gratuitous and gravitas in the same sentence! But Wiki came through again for me in the pinch!!)

Well, all you have to do is go and ask her mother for chrissakes!

Then I was thinking, how would this new type of analysis apply to other candidates?

So I was thinking about Chris Christie (in Espanol, that would be Jesus d’Jesus and in German Kris Kringle)

As far as gravitas, all you have to do is look at this NJ Governor’s face along with the rest of him.

This guy has a B.A., an M.A. and a PhD. And unlike Barbour, Newt likes Negroes. Well sort of I think:

I can only predict that the next Republican Candidate for President will be full of gravity and gravitas smothered in gravy most gratuitously!
