Sen. McCain didn't want to look back at his VP choice - and got pretty snippy with Matt Lauer while apparently saying he didn't know what vetting process was conducted - but he had no problem looking back to Trent Lott and to bemoan the double standard with Harry Reid. At the end, Lauer pleaded for - and got - understanding for having to ask the questions.
Like his fellow AZ Senator (Jon Kyl) yesterday, McCain refused to take a stand one way or the other, while playing to his (would-be) supporters on the right by invoking the double standard line.
When reporters/interviewers question these guys - especially on a sideshow issue like this - they really need to pursue them: (a) make them specifically answer the question instead of dancing around; and (b) make it clear whether they are talking about resigning the Majority Leader post or the Senate seat itself.
Steele and Kyl were asked about the leadership post, which is what Lott was FORCED TO GIVE UP BY HIS REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES. Which brings us to (c): Did YOU (Mr. Republican Senator) help convince Lott to step aside?
