well, CNN has started their work:

let's hope they have the internet and know how to find cnn.com

My own personal peccadilloes are: why aren't they going after Giuliani? What he did was way dangerous instigation, it was so clear. He's gone beyond the pale, it's really incredible. SOMETHING he is doing has to be illegal. What is wrong with him, really? If he still has some marbles left and has not gone totally insane, then he must be doing what he is doing because he is basically being blackmailed, has need for money someone is giving him or some such.

Having a MAGA contingent in my family has brought me to think of it in terms of personal responsibility. They want to see the world a certain way and people emerge who will help them with that. There are the Machiavellian motives of various thought leaders but there are the desires of those who listen. It is a symbiosis.
So I am all for some kind of justice to happen to the ones who incite. But when I remember all those rallies that brought Trump into view, it is the people who attended that stands out sharply. They are Trump and all his mouthpieces.
by moat on Thu, 01/07/2021 - 3:57pm
I want to make a different sort of response about the ones who incite. While people like Rudy and Trump have a clear line of culpability to what transpired, they are also connected in other ways that are just as important to investigate but are more difficult to connect to this particular crime. There are overlapping circles of activity that need to be distinguished before approaching the matter as a sequence of causes. So I will attempt to describe those circles.
Voter suppression has been a key instrument to GOP success for a long time. Along with efforts to actually prevent votes from happening, control of how the votes are processed and limiting what will be called valid has been a game plan they have pursued in the name of fairness. The Cruz/Hawley effort is that same dish served with a sprig of parsley. They may be complicit with the event in some way but the result weakened their agenda.
In the Trump circle, the permission to use violent rhetoric was gained by treating it as a performance. The Rallies didn't mean to suggest you actually hurt people. People can walk around State Capitols with live rounds because everyone knows it is not for real. Professional Wrestling with AR-15s. If some kind of tacit acceptance of that element had not been reached with law enforcement, they would have been shot at the bottom of the steps. Rudy just referred to what happened in the US Capitol as a Rally.
There is another circle that views all of this as some kind of religious theater that requires no proofs of particular results. A blank check to stop some greater evil not discussed by the others. Not "true believers" in a cause but the ultimate arrogance of explaining history itself.
There are the white supremacists who do not require too many brain cells to recognize.
So you have several quite disparate groups thinking you could play with fire and not get burnt. Some are hoping to kindle that fire They are all wrong but for different reasons. They all have plenty of members thinking the game is still on. They will meet together in some circle of Hell as Dante demonstrated. In the meantime, the power ot this odd confederacy comes from the inchoate collection of their agendas and not just from a single source of ideas.

There's also quite a bit of behind-the scenes stuff - the Rudy-Tuberville calls, whatever Roger Stone's doing with Proud Boy's, the new Acting SecDef and DHS head, these various gutting of existing staff at the different security branches and dismantling of time-honored protocols & procedures. Yeah, it's tied to the voting/steal, it's tied to race protests with exemptions/encouragement for their street gangs, it's tied to the power-by-(so far "almost")any-means approach we've seen expanded the last 20-25 years.
And part is our desire to reasonably predict the future - the comfort level of king the 19th-20th will be moderately uneventful, vs the threats that make us nervous. If me sitting in Europe knows there's a serious security risk on the 6th, it's pretty damn obvious, and to see it mishandled intentionally and/or stupidly is a very disturbing development, more than the actual results fortunately. Your concerns about 8 days from now would be a bit hysterical before 6Jan - now they're reasonable sadly. Our Overton Window keeps expanding, and while it hasn't been as bad post-successful-election(s) as I worried it would be, there's always this disturbing maybe, the Trump uncertainty.

BUT they'd have to move exceptionally fast on that. Because many may be in the hospital soon (if they can find the space where they live), some may be dead:

comes to mind they are under a lot of pressure, a scramble to figure out any new groups or individuals pronto they might not know about, that would be given to instigate against the new administration, and if they figure some they round up have more potential for violence, to be ready to argue about bail? Either that or lock Joe and Kamala up worse than they already are. Not a pretty civil liberties situation.

Gordon-Reed and "Nerdgirl" here are amused because "Via Getty" means that the photos are "via Getty Images". I imagine it's not a real efficient procedure for the FBI to deal with public leads:
Though I've also got to stay that I've met at let one FBI agent that wasn't the brightest bulb on the block in her supposed field of specialty.

I see that this guy is stealing a podium but can we really be sure he's not a Native American. Wouldn't it be considered reparations then and not theft?
by ocean-kat on Thu, 01/07/2021 - 11:33pm
since you brought such ironies up, here's a story about how if life were fair, some summer arsonists in Minneapolis should maybe be paying reparations to a Native American center

"stop the duopoly” — a reference to the dominance of the Republican and Democratic Parties in the American political system, a fixation of many Boogaloo bois. And then there's that one of the few other interests Boogaloo right and left share is trading tips on incendiary devices...and the hatred of law enforcement, especially Feds...

Here's someone who needs to be arrested.
A Newly Elected Derrick Evans, a newly elected member of West Virginia's House of Delegates, was livestreaming on Facebook as he and other protesters muscled their way through the doors of one entrance carrying Trump flags and signs. The video shows the Republican lawmaker, clad in a helmet and military-style gear, cheering as those ahead of him rip back the door amid the attempted coup, in which one woman was shot and killed.West Virginia Delegate Was Part Of The Pro-Trump Mob That Stormed The Capitol

Trump said he loves them, and they're patriots.
Trump will issue presidential pardons, AND award presidential Medals of Freedom and signed MAGA hats to any indicted freedumb loving insurrectionists.
127 or more Republican House members, plus Cruz and Hawley, will support Trump on this and say prosecutions are an unjustified divisive partisan witch hunt that will divide the nation undermining Congressional unity for the Biden administration..

I would add to this comment of Brian Stelter to Josh Marshall "but would they be telling us the truth if they were holding those press conferences?"
I think FBI tends to be one of those institutions like public health or the Pentagon where often they lie because they think lying is in the common good, the white lies thing. And sometimes it's even required just to catch a perp. Then there's the rah rah pep rally for the troops messaging thing of traditional p.r....I actually sort of prefer that it's finally sunk in that most of these types have to publish updates on the internet, easier to deconstruct. I do realize that the live press conference is important for getting the attention of a lot more people, but massive spin always goes along with that and then you have to end up having to read a journo's destruction anyways..,

Makes me think of making up a new net abbreviation: WWPT? for What would Pence think?
