The mask mandates aren't really enforced that much except by peer pressure. And smart businesses will still require them and they can (along the lines of "no shoes, no shirt, no service") And smart people will still wear them.

The real state regulations of capacity limits, on the other hand, are enforced by fear of huge fines on the part of businesses, and people do tattle and cops do come when called.

Allowing 100% capacity is extremely dangerous. One movie theater opening to a big crowd could do a ton of damage.Interior crowds are extremely dangerous, far more than outside.

So I was just on a conference call where Dr. Mark Ghaly, CA's HHS director, explained how the vaccination/covid plan is changing. The short version is:

They're doubling vaccine allocation for communities in the lowest quartile of the Healthy Places Index.

Those communities have 25% of the population, but 40% of deaths/cases.

But they're seeing half the vaccination rates of communities in he top quartile (16% vs 34%).

They're also tying restrictions to vaccination rates.

When they get to 2 million doses in these communities, the threshold for being in the less restricting "red tier" moves from 7 cases per day to 10.

This makes a lot of sense on paper.

The harder question with it is whether they can target this much vaccine (they also have educator set-asides, now) and keep up the speed of vaccinations.

That said, so many of the cases, hospitalizations, essential workers, and deaths are in these communities that if you can't accelerate vaccination here, you can't get statewide numbers down fast enough.

(I just finished my second shot at Yankee the other day. There were scary long lines as they had decided to add first shots again there as well. But the fucking ARMY was there organizing the lines and you better believe the lines moved pronto and in good order everyone 6 ft. apart and it only took a half hour start to finish including waiting after the shot. The Army guys included this nice little touch most decidedly not New York style: they pulled out anyone who looked like they were struggling with being in line because of handicaps and put them in front.)

Confidence in coronavirus vaccines has grown with majority now saying they want it

Pew reported that about 19 percent of survey respondents have already gotten the vaccine, while an additional 50 percent said they “definitely or probably” planned on getting vaccinated.

In a Kaiser Family Foundation poll released late last month, 55 percent of U.S. adults said they have either received at least one dose of the vaccine (18 percent), or wanted to get the inoculation as soon as possible (37 percent).

Recent Axios/Ipsos polling also showed similar results, with 57 percent saying they would receive the vaccine or have already gotten it, up from just 13 percent of adults who in September said they would be willing to get the vaccine once it was available to them.

Despite the increased willingness to get vaccinated among Americans overall, minority groups and people in lower income levels have continued to say they are less willing to receive one of the FDA-approved vaccines.

Black and Hispanic adults continue to be more likely than White adults to say they will “wait and see” before deciding whether to get the coronavirus vaccine, Kaiser found, though Pew on Friday found that a majority of Black Americans — 61 percent — now say they plan on getting vaccinated or already did, up from 42 percent who said the same in November.

Pew found that 14 percent of lower-income adults say they have gotten at least one dose of a vaccine, compared with 20 percent of middle-income adults and 27 percent of those in upper-income brackets.

These findings come as public health experts have said that somewhere between 70 percent and 90 percent of the American population would need to get vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity, in which enough people will be resistant to the virus causing COVID-19 that it will be all-but eliminated [....]

Studies like this are part of the problem of opening the schools-especially as they seem to indicate that part of the mutating of new variants is that they find kids a more luscious target. But other studies indicate it might be safe with precautions. This is the real truth about conflicting information from experts: they don't always know, they aren't sure! Advice is balancing "what if"s", balancing risk, balancing damage to society, etc. No hard truths when the fucking monster is mutating against their efforts.

Kudos for ignoring that Trump used Bill Barr and the DoJ to attack Democratic governor's whatever the stat of affairs (note Trump tweeting gleefully about Cuomo, but was the guy who confiscated masks and other gear from states while urging people to drink bleach and hydroxychloroquine). And the announcer - i always thought "shit-eating grin" was hyperbole, but he pegs it.

reminds me of how revisionism often works: at the time, when there is chaos and the world is falling apart, people are so grateful to have someone, anyone, someone who knows nasty playa ways stand up to and manipulate the real super nasty playa, and then when things die down we revert to a narrative where they are all equally evil

It’s not that 5% are prone to get covid, it means you are 95% less likely to get covid if you are vaccinated. So if your odds of getting covid were 1 in 100 before being vaccinated, they are now ~1 in 2000.

So maybe 1/2500 chance in 2 months (0.04%) of catching it under bad (not necessarily existing) conditions, vs 20x worse (0.8%) otherwise. But If 20% of those other people also got vaccinated, those "bad conditions" got significantly better. There's a Bayesian framing based on "how many cases actually exist" that makes the % change not just a multiplier but closer to exponential

And then there's the decrease in severity if you're vaccinated, including the greatly decreased chance you'll die, not expressed in these numbers. Meaning the famous "herd immunity" is actually more reachable

Events: Heavy gunfire is occuring around the area of the U.S. Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre. All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.

Actions to take:

Avoid the area;

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
