I looked at his bio in wiki. He tried to protect Nixon and lied but latter in life changed his story about Watergate. That Nixon knew about it before it happened. He was the first to fall on his sword.

I know and I loved All The President's Men and that short scene with this reverend (he became a pastor after all) kinda telling the truth to W&B.
How much is true as far as this movie goes?
I don't know, but I came to kinda like the guy.
And like you say, he took decades before he admitted what he had heard.
In the end, as far as I can tell, Jeb was a good man.
