Three people were injured on Saturday after a 12-gauge shotgun went off while being checked at a North Carolina gun show.
Authorities said at a Saturday afternoon press conference that the shotgun was being unzipped from its case at the security entrance to the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina, when a round of birdshot pellets discharged, hitting three people.
The gun owner, who allegedly intended to sell the weapon at the show, was interviewed by police on Saturday afternoon, though there was no decision whether he would face charges.
“I want to emphasize that this was an accident,” said Joel Keith, public safety and security chief for the state Department of Agriculture.
I don't care that it was an accident. This happens all the time and often someone is accidentally killed because of this type of stupid and irresponsible behavior. Its reckless endangerment and he should at least lose his right to own a gun. Its by dealing with these common events we change the mind set concerning guns. Irresponsible gun owners don't have a right to bear arms. I say that as a responsible gun owner. We can change people's attitudes and behavior concerning guns, just as we have changed public views and acceptance of smoking and drunk driving.

‘Firearms instructor’ hired as school guard leaves handgun in student bathroom
A prosecutor in Lapeer, Michigan says, “No harm, no foul,” after a charter school took the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) advice and hired a armed security guard who promptly left his handgun unattended in a student bathroom.
Chatfield School co-directors Matt Young and Bill Kraly announced last week that they had hired retired Lapeer County Sheriff’s Dept. firearms instructor Clark Arnold as a security guard in response to the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
“It’s a tremendous asset to the safety of our students,” Young told WNEM in a report that aired on Tuesday.
But by Wednesday, the school had admitted to The Flint Journal that the retired firearms instructor had made a “made a breach in security protocol” and left his unloaded handgun unattended in the school restroom “for a few moments.”

My cousin was in a local Petsmart when a guy standing near her was injured by his gun going off. She was first to render first aid and her the guy's son saying, "I wish he'd never bought that gun." My cousin posted this on her FB page and I particularly liked this comment: "If good people with guns are supposed to protect us from bad people with guns, what protects us from stupid people with guns?"

Getting a gun to defend your home is a bad bet statistically. If that gun ever kills anyone, it will not be an armed intruder but you or a family member. Most likely, someone will use it to commit suicide, but accidents and domestic disputes also take their toll. Successfully repelling a home invasion occurs only in movies.

I'm sure the NRA response would be that if those 2 adults and 3 children had guns of their own, they could've stopped the teenager earlier.
