The Bishop and the Butterfly: Murder, Politics, and the End of the Jazz Age

    More Police Brutality--Victoria, texas.

Another young hot headed cop is recorded on the cruiser camera of a Victoria,Texas, patrol car assaulting a 76 year old man who was stopped for not having an inspection sticker on his car. The cop, 23 years old, had been jamming in the patrol car to "Under Ground Kings" by Drake which continues to blare throughout the videotaped assault. The video can be accessed on HuffPo, and most likely has gone viral. Watch it and become even more disgusted at needless police brutality. And this time it's a 76 six year old victim completely within his rights---now you guys are getting me pissed off.

A bystander, the sales manager of the business where the old guy is pulled over, portrays what any bystander should do particularly if they are in my age group and are just plain tired of watching this kind of crap go down. The sales manager calls the cop a godammed Nazi Storm Trooper. Let's call it like it is.

I feel a kinship to Mr. Vasquez and want to jump into my car, drive to Victoria, and give the lawyer a retainer to start the prosecution of the rogue cop. Also, I had a brush with death in Victoria and am just contemplating what might have happened to Mr. Vasquez, who was tazzered twice, if he had had a heart condition. He might have died on the scene.

It was 15 years ago, on the two lane route 77 heading into Victoria. The day was perfect, sunny, bluebonnets in the pastures and along the road. I was driving an Infinity QX4, built like a tank. My work truck was a mile behind me, the driver and myself headed for Brownsville for a pilot test of our services. The road there is rolling, what we used to call dipzy do's.

As I came to the top of a hill there was a car right there in my lane coming fast at me and instinctively I left the road to the right. When I came to there were bluebonnets in the front seat, a cow was looking in through the window, and the hood of a Camry was in my lap. The other driver had also left the road and nailed me 200 feet away, like she had a bead on me. I loved that t-boned QX4, its air bags saved me.

I most likely suffered less bruising than Mr. Vasquez. When I tried to sue the driver, my lawyer said I wouldn't get much. "The girl was clearly trying to kill herself and take me with her", I said. "The insurance doesn't cover that", he said, "besides this is a poor county and you never get the awards you would up North".

If I had a car as well built as the QX4, 9 miles to the gallon, I would be on my way to Victoria. But I think Mr. Vasquez will have a slam dunk case and even though the awards aren't high, I wish Mr. Vasquez a new Infinity QX 5 and much more. Maybe then the police would show some respect as nothing else seems to be working.

North of Victoria on Rt. 77 is La Grange, home of the Chicken Ranch, known in Hollywood as the "Best Little Whore House in Texas". Too bad the brothel is shuttered. Maybe these hot heads should find some other suitable outlet for all that testosterone---I mean, after a 23 year old rookie with a chip on his shoulder listens for hours to "Under Ground Kings" and guzzles four cans of Red Bull, he could find a better outlet for his worthless self than taking down a 76 year old Hispanic man minding his own business.

Thanks, Michael. As we say in Texas, "preciate you".

“I’m not going to put up with that. I don’t care who he is”

    @ 3:03

Prior to this statement it appears he was combative. Trying to walk away from the officer.

Although a sad situation it was made worse by the lack of cooperation.

The officer may have given a warning or a ticket, but Vasquez escalated the situation by his reaction. " I don't care who you are".

    Another F. the police encounter?

Thanks for the link.  I've had my say.

With former KGB officer Putin running Russia, to get some background on Russian history relating to the KGB and its Stalinist predecessor NKVD I read a few out of print books including:

    Empire of Fear Vladimir Petrov

Escape to the Future by a different Vladimir Petrov, who became a Professor of History at GW University

Under Two Dictators (new edition on Kindle)

The treatment of prison camp/concentration camp/slave camp inmates in the Soviet Union, and in Nazi Germany (Under 2 Dictators) sounds peculiarly similar to many of these excessive police use of force cases in the US.

What particularly made me note this similarity was the ever ready barrage of excuses for "why they got beat up/shot/ killed/tasered" etc that Resistance never fails to come up with.

Resistance comments contain the exact same 'they deserved it' rationale to justify the worst kind of punishments meted out by sadistic Stalininst/Nazi camp guards. The risks, and the 'strict to the point of abuse' camp rules and severe punishments for infractions, even minor, were well known by inmates.

Like: "punched in the face for improperly addressing the guard, pummeled with rifle butt for being late or not answering for roll call (inmate was deathly ill), sent to punishment cell for questioning an action of a camp authority etc

These were worst crimes ever perpetrated in the name of 'law enforcement' by a government on its own people, and our own cops are getting enough like that to cause serious concern.

It's an age-old excuse: It's your fault. You made me do it. It's used as a defense for everything from domestic violence to government sanctioned torture. And as long as there are those who, like Resistance, accept it, the abusers will never be forced to take responsibility for their actions.

Thanks, Barefooted. I'm looking over my last paragraph wondering whether it reflects terrible thoughts about women. I would not wish this guy on anyone. Do I have poetic license on this one or am I just part of the problem?

No need to overthink it, Oxy. You're clearly not suggesting that violence should be redirected, and I don't see anyone taking it that way. But if it's nagging at you, do some editing - your call.

    Thanks.

I never said there wasn't or isn't sadistic guards,  I just haven't seen it in these most recent events and neither has the Grand Juries.

It may take awhile but the perpetrators are caught eventually

Thanks, NCD. I don't know how the bent toward violence of those with total authority could be any better demonstrated in our current culture than by this video.

The cop in the video who tackled that 76 year old for (yes Resistance) no reason at all except that the cop felt like doing it is the exact equivalent personality type of the Jap guard who abuses the former Olympic runner in the upcoming movie Unbroken, or NKVD sadists under Stalin - both positions would be a dream job for this Texas cop, license to brutalize, which is what he apparently has now, it has to stop.

I didn't see a cool calculating Nazi or KGB guy in that vid, I see a hothead with impotence issues who just couldn't take one more person talking back to him that day, mad as hell and not going to take no lip anymore.. He's the same as every male road rager who ever pulled out a gun over an altercation. NO BUSINESS BEING A COP, and furthermore NO BUSINESS EVEN HAVING A LICENSE TO CARRY ARMS. Highly ironic that he was complaining about a car sticker, probably shouldn't be allowed to drive a motor vehicle, either..  I wish there was an actual chemical test for the condition, unfortunately there's not.

I'm seeing what you don't see 'cuz of my recent reading list (see above).

The really cool calculating NKVD types didn't work at the slave camps as guards, it was a hard life in a remote region. They hired low education level enforcer guys for camps, not all were brutes many did it for the extra pay.

I think this is the root cause of most police abuse. Racism plays a part but I think it's less hatred of blacks than the cop's knowledge that if they target people of color they will more likely get away with it. Blacks just bear the brunt of it because of their lack of power. Some cops want more than common courtesy or respect. They want total submissiveness and they want it right now. For some, many? cops there is only one answer to any order.

oh yessa massa I gon be a gud nigga

While white people experience this as well abusive cops are usually a bit more careful. During the 60's white long haired hippies were acceptable targets for police abuse. But that changed pretty quickly and long hair and pony tails on men became acceptable. Cause the white dudes had them and you could never tell who that young white dude's dad or uncle or grandpa might be. And a sufficient number of the white majority were at least a little sympathetic to the young white dude. They could see how he might be their son.

All of us have to deal with a little disrespect now and then. I don't get to beat someone up just because they got a little smart mouthed with me. I'm able to control my temper and my fists. At most maybe I'll get a bit sarcastic or insulting back. Cops should be more capable of dealing with a little back talk than the average citizen. They should be able to handle it without smashing people in the face or against the pavement, without using a taser, or without killing them.

Maybe the officer thought he saw one of the Mexican mafia's henchmen and decided to pull Vasquez over to investigate for his registration and license?

Maybe one of Whitey Bulger's old buddies?

Proving what does age have to do with this call?

Or maybe the officer wasn't going to chase Vasquez, into the shop, to be pounced upon by a piece of muffler pipe, or that Vasquez's buddy, seen in the video, wouldn't gang up on the officer, inside the garage?

Resistance, was that a funny? Right on, man.

Does Godwin's Law still apply if you use the  KGB or the NKVD?

Godwin's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No Godwin doesn't have a 'all internet threads wind up with the NKVD' Law.

The GOP seems very Stalinist to me these days, as I have posted. Out of control law enforcement goes right along with that meme.

As far as Hitler goes, we did have a Nuremberg prosecutor say GWBush violated the same international laws that Nazi Germany did and should be put on trial.  Perhaps in his smug 'it could never happen here' blather Godwin would dismiss the import of that opinion.

We certainly need to also hold the Departments that hire these rouge cops accountable and fire the Chief too. These fools need to wake up to the fact that everyone is carrying a phone these days that can record several minutes of video. People are becoming more apt to record these types of incidents as their civic duty.
