The Bishop and the Butterfly: Murder, Politics, and the End of the Jazz Age

Watcha' gonna do when you get outta jail? Think I'll make a movie....

SMH) We learn again today that the search for fame will subvert the success of even the most fortunate.

In the case of Joaquin Guzman, boss of the Sinaloa Cartel, he is said to have precipitated the raid which ended his brief hiatus (6 months)  from what promises to be permanent imprisonment because of a stated intention to produce his own biopic.

Apparently, the narcocorridas were insufficiently congratulatory, or perhaps enjoyed too limited a circulation.

Bearing in mind that he is already wealthy beyond any ordinary avarice, and certainly powerful enough to maintain the self esteem of the most insecure sociopath, we can only wonder why a guy who had made not one but TWO improbable prison breaks would jeopardize his freedom on a humbug, in this case the pursuit of cinematic immortality.

Maybe he had read one too many biographies of Joseph  Kennedy, and failed to realize that , somewhat like being a premature anti-fascist, being a premature purveyor of once prohibited merchandise is risky business.

Someday the cartelistas' descendants may , like the Seagrams and Kennedys of today, achieve public acclaim.

At present, though, El Chapo may become the poster child for successful  extradition, the prior refusal of Mexico to accede to US demands to the contrary notwithstanding.

Sometimes, it's better to keep your head down, vato.

(h/t) Tom-Tom Club, for the premise...

For those unfamiliar with the narcocorrida genre, (and just because I love Breaking Bad), a sample:

Yes, I have to agree. This unfortunate arrest was a terrible blow to the reality television industry. Ah..... that was your point wasn't it?

Actually, my point is that under different circumstances Guzman would be widely revered as a public benefactor, helping the serotonin deprived to smooth out their inner peaks and valleys--now, however, his benefactions are only recognized in his home town where he has (by report) spread the wealth with enough enthusiasm that once safely stashed he prolly coulda' stayed out forever.

    Sorry 'bout your luck, Chapo.

My point, more succinctly: Fuck the DEA

    Bill and  Joaquin's  excellent adventure...

Really?  Sean Penn as your cinema consigliere?

Don't get me wrong. I have grown to respect Sean Penn for his work in Haiti, for his consistently scoring top shelf pussy, for his stalwart embrace of left politics.

That said, I reiterate my firm conviction that a man on the run has no business communicating with ANYONE, let alone a ceelbrity.

    Que pena!

Jolly, I must say, you often make my day!!!!!!!

Madonna, Robin Wright, Charlize Theron....These are heavy hitters, packin' some superior DNA.

Thus, just as you look at Michelle and know that Barack can't be a total asshole, and you look at Suzi and figure that I must have something on the ball, so we must adduce to Sean's credit his ability to hold the interest of women of spectacular talent.

Could it be they just think "Fast Times at Ridgemmont High" and just swoon?

Bob Crane used to manage much the same with Hogan's Heroes, though he wasn't near as bizarre as the movie paints him.

I did not have the impression that Crane married or lived long term with the women you reference, nor do I glean that they were giants in their fields as are Penn's consorts.

Helga from Hogan's Heroes? She was a goddess, a valkyrie. Better than the material girl, a real blond.

Sean Penn is off the hook...

The Jefferson Airplane used to play this clip to open their shows

The text messages also show Guzman's concerns that people who knew him were being monitored - turns out he was right.

The trail for Guzman had gone cold until telecommunication intercepts -- along with Penna and Castillo's travel to meet El Chapo -- helped U.S. and Mexican law enforcement narrow down the drug lord's location.

This would appear to be a variant of the situation referenced in this quote, for which I  cannot remember the provenance.

"A special spot in hell awaits the man who, finding himself in flight from a sure and mortal peril, pauses to ogle a naked woman in a window"

4:15 AM: A prison van was found abandoned only a mile away from the prison. Mexican officials believe the two guards, who began working at the prison just months ago, were actually members of the Sinaloa Cartel working for Guzmán.

    EDIT TO ADD:

    HOAX
