Just wanted to edit the summary and hopefully make it easier to link to the story. Also I'm linking again to the the relevant testimony by AG Sessions at his confirmation hearing.

Incredible. Why lie? Senator Franken asked him the direct question about contact with Russians and Sessions lied.
Sessions cannot be trusted to be in charge of the investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia. If Sessions recuses himself from the investigation, who chooses the special investigator?

Condi Rice supported Sessions. Once again, she loses credibility.

Sorry DD, I did fix the link last night. and thanks RM for posting it as well. It's an amazing story. One thing that I'll be watching for is the battle over the standards, and sometimes this battle obfuscates real issue. With Sessions, the immediate two issues are whether he lied at his confirmation hearing and, if so, whether that law, constitutes perjury or a lesser offense relating to the failure to provide information under oath. In any event, it seems to me that he clearly lied when he answered Senator Franken's question. To me, that means he should resign as AG, and with respect to that issue the criminal implications of what he did are not even relevant.
by Bruce Levine on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 8:42am
There are usually good reasons for lying, but this administration haven't proven capable of finding any.
by Danny Cardwell on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 8:37am
I agree with you Danny 100 percent, particularly when in this case the lying is consistent with other lying by Flynn (so far) about contacts with Russian officials or intemediaries.
by Bruce Levine on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 8:45am
If this happened to an AG in a Hillary Clinton administration, every Republican in Congress would want a resignation.
by rmrd0000 on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 8:54am
And they would be right, under those circumstances, to do that!

Top Republicans call on Sessions to recuse himself from Russia investigation
~OGD~
by oldenGoldenDecoy on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 9:46am
I think so yes OGD, good point. First, they can try to conflate recusal and staying on as AG, i.e. the argument we might say sounds like "OK he lied and recused himself, move on you partisan hack". Second, as to recusal, what does that mean. Can the Justice Department subordinates handle the investigation independently?

NBC is reporting that Senate minority leader Schumer will ask for Sessions' resignation. I also understand that other Democratic senators are already demanding he resign. I think it has to head that way.

by oldenGoldenDecoy on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 11:43am
I suspect that lawyers are taught about the importance of answering the questions they are asked but they know not to volunteer other information even if it is related. Session's meeting with the deadly Russian was senate business in the senate offices and probably witnessed by many people and we are not at war with Russia even if some people wish we were.
The dems may get Sessions to recluse himself from the McCarthyite sideshow they have planned but no laws were broken by any of these incidents so Schumer may be shedding more crocodile tears when his demands are ignored.
by Peter (not verified) on Thu, 03/02/2017 - 12:04pm
You may wish to look at what I wrote above on those who would make this into a criminal case exclusively. Not so sure it's going to be narrowed as such. We're gonna look under some rugs Peter; it's going to be sweepinng and it's going to make some folks crazy, I'm sure.

Trump chose Sessions a man criticized by Coretta Scott King. Sessions supports voter suppression. Trump is a white supremacist. You can take a deep dive into his racist history at the NYT link.

Beauregard wanted a special counsel after hearing that AG Loretta Lynch met with Bill Clinton during the campaign. She recused herself from the email investigation. Sessions should, at a minimum, recuse himself from the Trump-Russia investigation.

I doubt we'll see any hunkering down from the Trump regime and the response so far looks like classic thrust and parry with plenty of touche.
The witch hunting losers are in such a frenzy they don't notice that the public is turning away from them.
by Peter (not verified) on Fri, 03/03/2017 - 1:13am
Why do you spin like this? You surely aren't getting paid to do it. The WH is already hunkering down and backing down. Flynn was fired and Sessions recused him self. The question is no longer if they'll hunker down but how much. That depends on what and how much they have to hide and how much is leaked and gets out to the public.

The Trump White House has been hunkered down for quite some time
http://www.rawstory.com/2017/02/trumps-white-house-is-scared-to-death-an...
All Trump had to do was release his taxes to prove no connections to Russian. In stead of doing the most rational thing, he lied about a forever audit. The failure to prove that he had to financial connections tonRussia created suspicion. Now his minions fail to disclose information, creating more suspicion. These are rookie mistakes. It is easy to see how Trump has had several bankruptcies and lawsuits. This is not going away.
Trump placed incompetent people in multiple agencies and the State Department is gutted. Russia remains over his head and some disaster will happen at HUD, Energy, Education, etc. He will blame Obama and the Democrats, but the truth will point out incompetence.
Trump said that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and his supporters would not bat an eye. That proves the stupidity of Trump voters. They don't realize when they are being insulted.and they would excuse his crimes.

WSJ reports that Sessions used personal campaign funds to pay for his RNC trip where he talked to the Russian ambassador. He used these funds rather than Senate funds because he discussed the Trump campaign during the meeting.
