The Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders was shoved aside by several Black Lives Matter activists and eventually had to leave an event in Seattle without giving his speech....When the crowd asked the activists to allow Sanders to speak, one activist called the crowd “white supremacist liberals”, according to event participants.
Is there any evidence these people are being put up to harass Sanders by some veiled subterfuge of the 1%?
Comments
The question is whether these folks are two individuals using the BLM banner or actually BLM.
Here is the statement from the two Seattle women
https://outsideagitators206.org/blog/seattle-says-bowdownbernie/
There was an apology issued by BLM for shutting down the rally.

The Sanders campaign has a staff that realizes he has to change the message of what he did for Civil Rights 50 years ago to what he is doing now. A response in the form of a plan is in development. Political campaigns have to deal with road bumps.,Sanders will actually be in better shape to make outreach to the black community because he face opposition from parts of BLM. If the Sanders campaign plays this properly, they can point out that Hillary has been all talk on issues of race.
If you remember the Bill Clinton campaign, he had confrontations over Sister Souljah and with Reverend Jesse Jackson. What Sanders is facing is nothing new.
by rmrd0000 on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 11:31am
Gerald Hankerson, the head of the Seattle-king County NAACP spoke at the rally wearing a BLM t-shirt. Hankerson spoke about the importance of BLM in discussion. Of note is the fact that Hankerson said to the press after the rally
This is a Sanders supporter speaking, not BLM.

Bow Down Bernie says he passively accepts the tyranny of white supremacy.
We have a second term black president, and now a black woman has replaced a black man as the highest law enforcement official in the country, if there is 'white tyranny' I think the aim of the group is off.
I don't think these are rational people you can reach out to.
by NCD on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 11:53am
NCD , at the same time, there is an active movement to suppress votes and depress the minimum wage. Black youth see unarmed people gunned down in the street. Prosecutors have a dismal record on trying police homicides. On the ground, all they see is white supremacy. The frustration is that they don't want to hear about activity in the Civil Rights movement fifty years ago, they want to hear about today. They also realize that the police will strike down a middle class black person as fast as they would a poor black person, Sanders economic message does not address the evils young black see first hand.
by rmrd0000 on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 12:11pm
Sanders appears to be the softest target. His events are easily invaded and usurped.
The bow down Bernie bigots could lie down in the gated driveways of the Department of Justice or the White House.
But that would draw attention to the fact that both are occupied and run by black leadership, who have done, and are doing, all they can to fight bad cops and cop racism.
What they are doing is silencing Sanders, he is a fairly old guy who certainly knows he will never be elected President, but who is trying to upset the economic structure of the 1%.
And, as Watree points out, attacking him and creating division, is exactly what the 1% would love the 99% to do.
by NCD on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 2:17pm
NCD, the WH and DOJ have already acted to reign in abusive police departments. Ferguson no longer uses the courts and ticketing as a cash cow at the expense of black citizens. The FBI is already investigated Sandra Bland, Sam Dubose, and the teen killed at the auto dealership. The problem is local police, not the WH or DOJ. The WH and the DOJ are the ones fighting voter suppression.
Here is a reminder that during the 2008 election, a Black Clinton supporter SC state Senator Robert Ford said that Obama couldn't win because Obama was black.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/02/19/clinton-woos-black-voters/...
Sanders had a local NAACP leader on the podium. Sanders now has a black national press secretary. Where is this wholesale division you talk of? Someone in BLM felt embarrassed enough to apologize. I have seen newer polling, but Hillary started out with over 90% of the black vote. Hillary is coasting. The first thing that the black community knew about Bill Clinton was Sista Souljah and a fight with Jesse Jackson. Clinton overcame the negative image. Fortunately, rather then just cry in his soup about "division", the Sanders campaign is mounting a counter-offensive. Are you seriously arguing that there is no way for Sanders to get out a positive message?
If Sanders is only running to influence the economic discussion he has already gotten Hillary to shift. In addition, he has the aid of Elizabeth Warren in keeping Hillary's feet to the fire.
by rmrd0000 on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 2:50pm
Bernie Sanders appointed black justice advocate Symone's Sanders (no relation) as his national press secretary. If needed, Symone Sanders can have a Michelle Obama style confrontation with the protesters in the future. Bernie Sanders is mounting a defense to these attacks. He is only going to appear stronger. If Symone Sanders plays this right, Bernie will be giving Hillary a fight for the black vote.
Bernie Sanders will be viewed as someone responding to racial injustice while Hillary has gotten a free ride. This could be a good thing for Bernie Sanders

I cannot believe that somewhere behind these assaults on Bernie's freedom to speak must be a clandestine right wing Koch type of group who seek to incite 'agent provacateurs' (or plain vanilla dupes) to disrupt, deflect, diminish and deter the economic message Sanders promotes, and sink him and his campaign in the Sea of Ferguson.
by NCD on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 2:44pm
If this is Koch backed, it can be defeated. If this is Hillary Clinton backed, it can be defeated. If it is a group of disenfranchised black youth it can be counteracted. Grow a backbone. How are you going to take on the GOP if this is a roadblock?

I am never frustrated with Americans or American politics.
I have very low expectations , that are unfortunately reinforced all too frequently, usually by Republicans.
For our MSM, our press establishment, our practice and efficiency as a not so informed or vibrant democracy and especially for the choices of many of our voters.
These folks included, assuming they even bother to vote.
by NCD on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 4:07pm
Marissa Jenae has a FB page with pictures and posts that support her belief that Black Lives Matter. For conspiracy theorists there is a picture of her with an Asian woman. In picture has a post noting that she was a GOP supporter in the past. She even wore a Sarah Palin pin on her backpack. The GOP screwed up and now she is on the other side.
I'm not going to post a link to her FB page, but it is not difficult to find. The BLM Seattle FB page is only days old. The BLM Seattle is listed as authorized, but the "launch" is not scheduled until the Fall.

by NCD on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 4:13pm
I don't see anything that BLM is doing that is diminishing his white support. I don't see that anything BLM is doing that will have blacks thinking that Sanders is a raging racist. Blacks will not vote for any Republican. The only one who can convince people that he might be rational is Kaisich. Kaisich will revert to wingnut form if he is elected with GOP control of the House and Senate. The innate horror of GOP ideas is enough to give a boost to Democrats.
The GOP wants war with Iran, some magical way to ship Mexicans across the border, no increase in minimum wage, no abortion even for rape or incest, voter suppression, lowering of tax on the wealthy to further destroy the middle class. etc. This is Goldwater on steroids with government interference of everyone who is not a Tea Party member.
Civil Rights are not on the minds of the GOP or its leadership at Fox News. I'd bet on either Sanders or Clinton.
BLM is going to have to demonstrate that they are passionate and not crazy. They will have to make some sort of peace with Sanders or they will have to after Hillary.
by rmrd0000 on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 5:55pm
I think you are going to see security at more of these events to discourage this. This event was not planned by the campaign but was a local event. He draws a very large crowd and that is what an reactionary wants.
The two women showed that they don't have much understanding of politics. Jumping up and screaming into the face of a event organizer doesn't play well. The organizers were simply not prepared to handle that. This also leaves an image problem for BLM.
Clinton is not easy to get at. She still has secret service guarding her. The news media can't even get up close for pictures. I was at a political rally a few years ago with the Big Dog campaigning. Some one heckled him about dying animals and they had that person out of there in the matter of minutes.

Here is a blog from one of the speakers that spoke just before Sanders. Here is all her mixed feelings on paper from this event. You get a sense of all the work that went into this event and the months of planning from this paragraph
http://www.thestranger.com/blogs/slog/2015/08/09/22671957/guest-editorial-why-saturdays-bernie-sanders-rally-left-me-feeling-heartbroken
There are organizations who are thinking about security that have Sanders on their list of key note speaker. And will not want to risk this kind of incident that will end a special event.
These young activist have to learn their issue is not the only important problem but a part of a group of serious problems. They can not go and interject themselves into events designed around a certain serious issue that people are engaged in and shut it down. This does do damage to their cause and can leave them without being asked for input. Republicans since 1980 has screwed up a whole lot of shit. All these issues are part of a bigger picture that the Republicans wants to do more damage to which includes their issue.
Campaigns evolve and we are in first part of this presidential campaign. By fall the Democrats will have a good feel for the political landscape and have solid proposals for all these issues.

by rmrd0000 on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 12:00am
I don't see BLM as part of some CointelPro program, a Rove plan, a Clinton, plan or some other outside operation. I see it as a somewhat loose-knit group of young blacks fed up with the system. They see no reason to trust a "savior" in the form of Bernie Sanders. They may be politically naive, but I think they are carrying out their own missions. The idea that black youth operating independently need some type of white guiding force behind them is condescending.
I did make a post on BLM Seattle's website asking why they hadn't attacked Clinton or any of the Republicans. We will see if they mount a defense on the website, during interviews, or elsewhere. Scott Walker's idea is to avoid "racial discord" by refusing to discuss racial injustice.

This is Dream Defenders, Florida,s home grown civil rights group that held the sit in after Travon Martin's murder at the state house for a month. They did so much to shed light on the situation here in Florida. They are still active and chapters across the state.
They are actively involved in trying to prevent the "gentrification" of a historical black beach and community in Miami. They work in the system and a few will probably go into public service. I have never known them to grab a mic and shut down a democratic event.
What I noticed about their face book page they have not made a statement about Seattle. They did do a post on Net Roots but I think they were there for that. This group has a lot of National Respect.
Here is their Face Book Page

BLM Seattle appears to find little difference between white Liberals and white Conservatives. Bernie a Sanders may be under attack because they feel Liberals are more dangerous. Marissa Jenae's FB page notes that without BLM Seatlle, Bernie a Sanders would not have appointed a pro-BLM press secretary or issued a detailed platform addressing racial injustice.
Edit to add:
The official BLM FB page notes that 1) it is not associated with any political party and 2) that there was no demand for BLM Seattle to apologize for their actions at the Bernie Sanders rally in Seattle.

Sanders hired his press secretary a couple of weeks ago. She was at Seattle and introduced him to the crowd The detailed platform was probably already done. He got a lot of input from the Southern Christian Leadership Council on that.
Marissa Jenae is just full of herself. All that was accomplish was a temper tantrum in front of 5000 people. For her to try to take credit for moves of hiring a press secretary and policy paper that was already part of the campaign just shows how little she knows about the political landscape. The story in the news is all about Marissa Jenae/BLM and very little about the issue. What they did was pull the focus to them and not the issue.
by trkingmomoe on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 1:57pm

This may make you feel better a white teen, Zachary Hammond, was killed by police in Seneca, SC. The circumstances are in question.,there was initially few reports of the homicide and the teen's family felt that it was because Zachary was white. Several MSM outlets picked up the story after outrage expressed on Twitter by supporters of Black Lives Matter.
BlackLivesMatter Seattle's interruption of Bernie Sanders is noted. Members of BLM seem to care about police homicides regardless of race.

Theologian Susan Thistlethwaite notes that the white Liberal response to BLM Seattle fits what BLM Seattle expected. Race and racism is a problem. WEB DuBois noted that black people are a problem in the United States. Ta-Neshi Coates notes that the goal of the U.S. is to destroy black bodies. Racism is just one of a series of problems that needs to be addressed. As one of a multitude of problems, the core issue that the bottom line is the destruction of black bodies is not an urgent matter.
Sanders focuses on economics. BLM focuses on destruction of black bodies. The boos heard from the mostly white audience in Seattle confirms what BLM Seattle thinks of white Liberals. Race and racism is just one of many problems needing solution. Rude black women taking over a microphone set up to discuss other "problems" angered the white Liberals. The two groups see the world differently.
We are still asking the question DuBois posed in "Souls of Black Folks". "How does it feel to be a problem in your own country?"
by rmrd0000 on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 8:55am
There were black on black gun battles and store robberies by black criminals on Florissant Drive in Ferguson last night.
These are the results of angry white liberals reaction to BLM and Bernie should do something about it?
Or the all too typical reinforcement of the stereotype that cops have to be tough on blacks, because even on a night of planned peaceful demonstration, shooting and violence breaks out in the hood.
I think the Rev. Ms Thistlewaite should spend more time and effort in the black community and less pontificating on the internet about the attitudes of white liberals in Seattle, or the predictable lack of BLM being brought up in Fox News GOP debates.
by NCD on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 10:43am
Hear lies the problem. We expect criminals to be criminals. We don't expect police to be criminals. Sam DuBose was stopped for not having a front license plate. He told the police officer that the bottle labeled "Gin" actually contained air freshener. He was shot in the head. The coroner's office found air freshener in the bottle. John Crawford was carrying a toy gun sold at the Walmart where he was shopping. He was killed while talking on the phone with his girlfriend. Tamar Rice was playing with a toy gun and shot dead. Sandra Bland was threatened with a Taser for doing an illegal lane change, simply for moving over for the police car behind her. A police officer pulls a gun on teenagers in bathing suits and pins a young black girl to the ground. Should we ignore these events until so-called black-on-black crime falls to an acceptable level? Is there any credit given for crime being at 40 years lows until flare-ups like the recent ones in Baltimore? Since violent crime fell dramatically, shouldn't blacks and the occasional theologian be able to question police homicides?
Crime fell despite, economic hardship and a push to release felons. Black teen pregnancies fell as well. I think the community earned the ability to criticize police actions.

Rev. Dr Susan K. Smith notes that forgiveness is a healing process. The families of the slain in Charleston were praised for their ability to forgive. She notes that BLM is not in a forgiving mood because they see no justice for state-sanctioned murders.
by rmrd0000 on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 10:41am
There is a federal Department of Justice.
A black woman runs it.
A black man ran it before her.
They work under a black President who supports them.
The Rev. should inform BLM about how the justice system works.
The DOJ has, and has used, its power to investigate, prosecute and imprison those who violate rights of citizens. It should do more.
Seattle white liberals or Bernie cannot do the above, although they are very easy targets for demonizing.
by NCD on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 10:54am
The WH and the DOJ cannot start an investigation on a police department before a questionable homicide occurs. We are talking about a problem with local PDs. Ferguson, for example, used the black community as a cash cow by targeted ticketing practices. Long-standing tensions exploded after the death of Micheal Brown.
by rmrd0000 on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 11:14am
The DOJ can start an investigation any time they have evidence citizens are being deprived of federal Constitutional rights.
They don't need dead bodies.
Joe Arpaio of Arizona has been under DOJ investigation for years for profiling (living) people in traffic stops.
