I'm betting that it'll cross right over the newly famous Mineral, Va.

We stayed on Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks this winter. It was our second time there and it's pretty special, as is the entire Outer Banks chain. I'm chewing my nails, hoping nothing happens to any of it, but I can't help but think, as I have so often when I'm driving along that tiny vulnerable ribbon of land, that it was never meant as a place to house people. They're barrier islands, made that way by past storms. Only people who are truly nuts would think they would be safe there for long.

I stayed on Hatteras Island last September. We were evacuated halfway through the trip because of Hurricane Earl. It's a lovely place when not being battered by 100 mph winds.
The houses on the OBX are striking in their similarity. That's because they were all built in 2004 after Isabel blew everything down.

"Some people" around here assert that OBX stands for obnoxious. I would never assert that, of course…

Yes, everything does look pretty new there. We're only there in the winter so no problem with hurricanes. The first year we went in January, but never again. Took the ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras, thinking we could stay somewhere near the lighthouse but had to drive all the way to Nag's Head before we could find a motel that wasn't closed for the season.
It's great, though, without crowds. And it is beautiful in it's own way.
There's that narrow strip between the sound and the ocean. I think this may be near where the ocean broke through a few years ago and busted up the road.

I visited Ocracoke during a summer job in the 1970s. It was delightfully desolate back then. Hard to choose between Cape Cod and Outer Banks - they're both beautiful.

Stay safe, everyone.
I'm off to find some batteries, and get extra cat food.

I stocked up last night - Two rolls of Brawny paper towels, two Tombstone frozen pizzas, store-baked choc chip cookies and a sixpack of Yuengling. I'm ready for anything. I bought a bunch of produce at Whole Paycheck a few days ago, too.
I filtered and filled several jugs of water and filled all my empty tea bottles with African Rooibos sun tea.
I also have lots of paper books in case we lose power.
by Donal on Fri, 08/26/2011 - 9:40am
Yuengling will save anyone.

Wasn't that a mighty day

Evidently, New Yorkers prefer vodka:

Um, G. I notice your sister doesn't have a ring on her left hand...Since I find myself within the five boros...
by jollyroger on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 5:58pm
Too much woman for you, jolly.
PS Propositioning the moderator's girlfriend is a violation of the ToS, especially during a hurricane.
by Michael Wolraich on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 7:57pm
Not your sister?? My bad...carry on, then.

P.S. I am put in mind of an occasion where, in conversation w/Bwak, I was describing a moment of litigation levity where as I said "and so I hit on opposing counsel because" at which she interrupted "...because that's what you do".
by jollyroger on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 8:15pm
Well, yez. Stay safe, Rog

The only danger around here is heartbreak from blondes...
At least currently, there is only drizzle--some fool did snuff in Virgina tryin' to surf.
You stay safe, you got all those trees and shit--the book notwithstanding, no tree grows in Brooklyn (at least not within falling distance of my place--although there is a backyard (what a concept!)

You're not the first to make that mistake.
Nor the second.

Are you drinking Sams? It's too light for a Newcastle. Or is it one of those weirdo NYC microbrewskis? Your girlfriend looks very nice and too pretty for you.
I am kind of surprised. Nice job.
=D
Cheers! (clink) stay safe you twooooo.

too pretty for you.
My thoughts exactly, and you see what trouble it got me into...

Yuengling and a cosmo. $4 happy hour. Cheers. Stay dry!

Good choices.

I hear on the weather channel that even the NY high rises aren't safe above the 10th floors because of the possibility of flying debris in the hurricane force wind.
Ok...we in the midwest do have our moments (tornadoes, blizzards and such) but this hurricane looks seriously terrifying. Please stay safe my coastal friends.
by mageduley on Fri, 08/26/2011 - 11:45pm
Thanks, mage, but I wouldn't worry too much. People are hyping the worst case scenario, as usual. I'm more concerned about the possibility of losing power for an extended period of time (though I confess to some small anxiety about the huge scaffolding outside my building).
by Michael Wolraich on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 12:17am
It was a dark and stormy hype, but unless Irene weakens a lot more, she will still be a dangerous storm with tropical storm force winds affecting a large geographic area.

above the 10th floors
If the storm surge don't get you (up too high to drown) then the flying glass will...
Also, above 6 floors the NYC water pressure is insufficient to reach you unpumped...I am happy to describe my ride-out-the-storm location as a three story structure in Brooklyn, at about 80 ft above sea level.
They are, however, predicting widespread and prolonged power outages, even for us whose wires are buried....bummer, no internet.
by jollyroger on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 12:20am
Don't forget to fill tub with a little water. Also fill any containers you have, like vases, empty juice containers, etc. Water usually is unavailable right after the storm. No electricity plus no water to flush is a bad combo.
