Guest op-ed by the new Senator from Utah @ WashingtonPost.com, published Jan. 1, 8:00 pm
The Trump presidency made a deep descent in December. The departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, the appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the president’s thoughtless claim that America has long been a “sucker” in world affairs all defined his presidency down.
It is well known that Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination. After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling. It did not. When he won the election, I hoped he would rise to the occasion. His early appointments of Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Nikki Haley, Gary Cohn, H.R. McMaster, Kelly and Mattis were encouraging. But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office [....]

Oh, and FWIW here's how he tweeted his op-ed to his Twitter followers 4 hrs. ago:

Romney is a man of principles and standards. I think he truly dislikes Trump. I doubt that there's anything more to the op-ed than that. I think it's highly likely he let himself be humiliated by looking for the Secretary of State job because he actually wanted to serve the US and protect it from Trump's incompetence. I don't think he was selling out. I think he really is an honorable man. As far as his principles and standards affect his policy I disagree with almost everything. So his dislike of Trump doesn't cause me to even consider voting for him.

Mitt Romney is a Republican
Here is Romney on the Wall

Romney may not like Trump’s style, but he will support Trump’s policies.

Mitt answers Trump's tweet on TV
and Maggie leans in on this whole meme in a new piece:
Mitt hasn't tweeted anything new since the link to his op-ed which I copied upthread. Whatever you might think of what he's doing by publishing the op-ed, this response to Trump's response strikes me as smart play. Sometimes in the past Mitt struck me as perhaps a little goofy or dull, lacking in street smarts. But FWIW I am getting the impression he knows how to manipulate a Trump type very well.

Go ahead, Mitt Romney: Utah Republicans are the most anti-Trump

Newt the Cynical Pol is dazed and confused that Mitt does not act in lockstep politically. Bannon is seeing establishment Republican zombies rising from the dead
Meanwhile, The Hill reports that Mitt has got himself a seat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, giving him an opening to wade into several looming foreign policy battles between Congress and the White House....He was also named to the Help, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committees. The committee assignments will need be ratified by the full Senate next week. The Foreign Relations Committee spot could provide Romney with a pathway to highlight his differences with Trump on foreign policy, an issue where the president’s views diverge from most of the Senate GOP caucus....

Some of the quotes Politico has here are actually quite interesting in that you get a glimpse of the fucked-up partisan way the whole Trump situation has gotten some of them thinking:

Romney is a bottom feeder like Trump. Trump is swimming in the same cesspool as Romney. Romney has better language skills in public. Remember the 47%?

And you made that as a reply to my comment about reception by other GOP Senators (instead of placing it as a new comment on the thread) because?

From the article
Despite his Op-Ed, there is nothing to suggest Romney will be a Maverick. He will fall in line. Past statements do not indicate that he will be an outlier.Romney is just another Republican Senator. The Republican Senators are overreacting.

Her point was it had nothing to do with what she posted (except it had "Romney" in it), so please post under a related comment or start a new base comment. Thanks.

No big surprise. Romney caved and voted to remove sanctions on a Putin ally just the way Trump wanted.
