MURDER, POLITICS, AND THE END OF THE JAZZ AGE by Michael Wolraich Order today at Barnes & Noble / Amazon / Books-A-Million / Bookshop |
Even if we aren’t demented, our mental functioning deteriorates as we grow older. Age-associated declines in mental-processing speed, working and long-term memory, and problem-solving are well established. Conversely, distractibility increases. We cannot focus and stay with a project as well as we could when we were young. As we move slower with age, we also think slower.

This article should be titled, why I don't want to vote for Trump, Biden, or Sanders.

And drafting Nancy seems to be, er, a "Lost Cause"

Clearly, this is the Biden campaign's (and Sanders') answer to that is to stress this:
Given that the head of the Executive is basically a figurehead, if he or she babbles a lot, the type of babble is the actual question to consider, no?
I guess one would really go read thinkers like Oliver Sacks on how much of basic personality and morals remains each step of the way after dementia starts to do its work? And whether it works to exacerbate basic qualities already inherent, which qualities tend to fade away and which take their place and might become stronger?....
I am now thinking of the younger presidents who weren't wonks and didn't have the habit of talking wonk. What do we really know about them when they are running besides campaign babble? How is campaign babble and talking points any different than a prop up doll who might have dementia?
It's who they hire to run the gummint, who they hire to help them make judicial nominations, and how much they understand how Congress works and how to work the public with certain memes to get Congress to do certain things? Again, the latter is mostly done by those they hire...

It's with some embarrassment that I'll admit I don't know what a president does all day. I also don't know what CEOs of corporations do on their job. It's reported they work 12 and 14 hour days, Doing what? But by all reports most presidents are incredibly busy with little free time and burdened with momentous decisions that weigh heavily upon their conscience.

I agree, Arta, and on Biden’s worst day he makes a thousand times more sense than trump on his best. But more important is that he will choose a cabinet wisely, and will take good counsel. The effect internationally with Biden on board is extremely important to our future and of the world’s future as well.
i want trump out of office by impeachment because if this lawless idiot loses the election he will have two months to wreak more havoc than we have ever seen. What does it say if we let this crooked poseur go unpunished? Why is impeachment even in the Constitution if not for this situation? Do we really want tp pay for his crime family’s Secret Service protection for decades?
VP Qtip, if he evaded the impeachment net would be even weaker than when he sits in a coma when asked to ornament a piece of furniture.

VP Qtip, hah.
Yikes, two peeps agreeing here, what have we started?
Edit to add more agreement: I used to worry about what VP Qtip could do with the Congress as president. But we have a Dem House now, and it would be too late for him to get anywhere now with just the Senate on his side.

I doubt this has that much to do with age, but I am sharing it nonetheless:

Ezekiel Emmanuel is one of the many people I would like to buy for what he’s worth and sell him for what he thinks he’s worth.
(Old Southern expression), but definitely true in this case. I have heard him spout so much stuff during my 30 years, supposedly listening to his fake brilliance. He used to lecture at GWU when I was a student. Snore.

Wow, I thought you were older than that. But yes, overrated.

Wow, Peracles, I am more than twice that old, but my “introduction” to Zeke was 30 years ago!

Personal experiences can be uninterestng but have the advantage of being facts- extending one's own experience.
Here's one.
My daughter's mother- in law- died recently at 102 . After her husband - a prairie minister -died 20 years ago she remained active .Made a trip to Florida every winter and had whatever a trip to Florida does for you when you live in the Dakota; Followed current events. In her late 90s she said she had lived long enough and was ready to die but wanted to live to see the election of the first female US President,
Much of her family joined on election night and shared her disappointment.
She died a few months later.

Every bell curve has two fringes. There are always anomalies. Should we just assume that all the candidates that are nearly 80 are unusually bright and healthy for their age? My parents are both 90 and pretty healthy for their age but I see both an intellectual and physical decline. My guess is if we spent time with any of these older candidates we'd notice the decline that usually comes with their age.
