Someone had to post a link already. Congratulations to all my gay and lesbian friends! Hell, congratulations to all my American friends! This is a historic day.

PS I love Scalia's hypocritical gripe, coming so soon after jiggery-pokery: “The opinion is couched in a style that is as pretentious as its content is egotistic,” Justice Scalia wrote of his colleague’s work. “Of course the opinion’s showy profundities are often profoundly incoherent.”
Well he can whine all he wants. It's done now, and we will never go back to the dark ages of intolerance to which Scalia clings with shaking knuckles (at least until the next climate apocalypse / asteroid strike / zombie outbreak).

Yeah, Scalia shows himself as the greatest intellectual idiot of the day just as Ducky noted in his blog about Obamacare.
Of course, Scalia is only humorous when his side loses. hahhahah
I mean how can one be married in NYC and end up in Montana 'divorced'?
Full Faith & Credit, as they say.

Scalia being the most incoherent egotistical asshole in recent Supreme Court history.
I could see him rubber stamping any edict issued by Mussolini as long as it assured him a well heeled meal ticket, and plenty of peons to shout at and pronounce sentence over as judge.

Yes, it's been a pretty good week progressive wise.
I just wish I wasn't such a jaded old Indian. I keep waiting for the 'squash flat'.
Oh, and congratulations to all the 'two-spirits' out there that can now legally get married!

The next hurdle on the marriage front will be the "religious freedom" laws that will continue to crop up. Republican legislatures are trying for a work-around, and their attempts in some states have been successful. Sadly, my NC government (it's painful to write that) has one of the worst on the books - magistrates can opt out of performing same sex marriages by stating personal religious objection in writing. Worse, it's worded so vaguely that it can technically apply to any couple for any reason, including interracial and interfaith.
These laws will be contested as unconstitutional in no short order, but various state Supreme and district courts will inevitably disagree, putting it before SCOTUS at some point.

Yes the GOP's game is to always keep issues in play and never settle or solve any issue or national problem. Settling these things is anathema to the GOP, as the issue can no longer be effectively exploited politically.
The ruling should suck the air out of the 'culture war' on gays the Republicans have used to get the haters out to vote in states where they think the tactic would work.
The GOP will no longer be able to use 'family and marriage' (homophobic) referendums/ballot initiatives to get out The GOP Base on election day. The long list of related past ballot measures are documented here.

I like this quote from today's ruling that Scalia wrote.
He writes like he is slipping into dementia. The lucky ones keep a happy and easy to get along with like Regan, but others are hard to manage because they end up cranky. His 9 pages today had places in them that didn't make much sense even for conservatives.
I am glad they have settled this issue for now. We need to move on to climate change and reducing the income gap.
by trkingmomoe on Fri, 06/26/2015 - 1:47pm
We do need to move on, absolutely need to. Which is why Chief Justice Roberts is wrong:
"Supporters of same-sex marriage have achieved considerable success persuading their fellow citizens—through the democratic process—to adopt their view," Roberts wrote. "That ends today. Five lawyers have closed the debate and enacted their own vision of marriage as a matter of constitutional law."
There are far more critical issues which the Republicans have also been making political hay out of and exploiting solely for their campaigns, issues they also hope are never resolved, never 'put away', by an unequivocal action like this one today. Congratulations to all 5 justices on the side of advancing America and making us free move on.

I wonder if Roberts would make the same argument for Loving v. Virginia?
by rmrd0000 on Fri, 06/26/2015 - 2:26pm
Well, that depends upon what kind of 'loving' you are referring to?
hahahah

LOL
Clarence Thomas, the black guy married to a white woman, voted against marriage rights today. He has to realize that his marriage was found legal only after a Supreme Court ruling. His argument seems to be that he would still have is dignity if he couldn't marry the woman he loved. Dignity just like the slaves and those held in Japanese internment camps had dignity. Those are his actual words!

So great! Thanks, Momoe. Had to be a huge moment for them!

It had to be such a nice relief for them. I know they didn't expect the court to let some of these bat shit crazy governors refuse Medicaid. I know the conservative court choose according to what is best for them to help the GOP win. I am sure they wanted to gut the whole thing but knew their cause would not survive it.
