Important to note the above is concerns records of homicides by all methods rather than number of shootings by guns.

My own anecdotals, paying strong attention to local news reports for months, is that a large number of shootings is occurring where there are many people shot but only a few die. (Probably due to inexperience handling recently acquired firearms!

So I suspect the increase in gun violence exceeds the increased homicide rate by a large magnitude. (And our health care system is no doubt seeing the results, like an epidemic.)

I saw this reported as it happened on the Spot News tweeting of the police radio, when they didn't know who it was that was shot. Was going to post it, it was so odd, in a Ripley's-believe-it-or-not-way, just didn't get around to it. Commenters piped right up along the lines of "wtf, that's right in front of the jail!"

If he had been executed by the state instead, he would have a least had a last meal.

Vallejo Police Department investigating shooting that kills 15-year-old

The Vallejo Police Department provided more details on Thursday into the city’s seventh homicide that killed a 15-year-old on Wednesday.

At approximately 5:52 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired in the 200 block of Maine Street in South Vallejo. Upon arrival, officers located a 15-year-old male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Tragically, the juvenile victim was declared deceased at the scene by Vallejo fire medical personnel.

The juvenile victim’s identity is being withheld.

At the scene of the incident, there were numerous people seen running in the area immediately after the shooting, according to a VPD news release.

Several people were reportedly armed with handguns according to that news release. In addition, two armed and uniformed complex security guards responded to the shooting and were shot at by alleged suspects(s). One of the security guards returned fire, and it has not yet been determined if the alleged suspect(s) were struck. The security guards were not injured, and there have been no additional reports of injuries.

“These deadly attacks on our children and the proliferation of gun violence in our city is not only a public health crisis, but a perpetuation of generational trauma,” Chief of Police Shawny Williams stated in the release. “This vicious cycle of community violence must stop today, and we will not turn a blind eye to these senseless acts plaguing the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our city.”

“Homicide is the leading cause of death of African-American males between the ages of 15-34. This is a public health crisis. We must employ federal, state and local resources to combat this issue,” Williams continued. “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this precious life lost and we will be doing everything in our power to bring about justice in this case.” [....]

The shooting that left an innocent woman dead in her Sisson Avenue apartment last month began as a revenge plot over someone else’s stolen dirt bike, new court records show.

Sylvia “Pebbles” Cordova, 56, was killed when rounds from a variant of an AK-47 assault rifle tore through her first-floor Parkville apartment while she was cooking dinner and struck her in the head, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Wednesday afternoon.

“They were going to kill for a bike? Like, what are your morals? You have no sympathy,” Jennifer Hernandez-Cordova, one of Cordova’s daughters, said. “[They were like] ‘No let me stand in front of here, let’s drive out, and I’m going to shoot into the house. The first floor.’ What? Not caring if there was anyone? What if there was children in there? What if we were there? What if my daughter was there? My daughter lived with her, are you kidding me? I would’ve been burying my mother and my daughter.”

Bond set at $1M for man accused of fatally shooting his child’s mother in west Houston

Authorities say Zacchaeus Gaston, 27, removed his ankle monitor the day of the shooting.

HOUSTON – A murder suspect that authorities said was out on bond with multiple violent crimes has been caught and he faced a judge Thursday morning.

After being thrown out of the courtroom for being disruptive, the judge set Zacchaeus Gaston’s bond at $1 million on the murder charge and $500,000 on the aggravated assault charge he now faces following his early-morning arrest on Thursday. If he makes bond, he will be under house arrest and monitoring. On his two misdemeanor cases, the judge kept his bond at $1,000 and $2,000, as set by the trial judge. He is expected to be back in court Friday for a hearing in which the trial judge can change conditions of his bond.

Gaston, 27, was arrested on Thursday at 12:40 a.m. and charged with murder and aggravated assault. A warrant issued for his arrest said he fatally shot his child’s mother, Layla Steele, 24, on July 1 as she held their son.

Steele died protecting her son Zeus, who turned one the day of the shooting. Zeus was struck in the leg by a bullet but is expected to recover with the help of a leg cast. Court documents say Layla and her mother were on the phone moments before the shooting.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - More than one year has passed since Darrell Gott Jr. was fatally shot in north Springfield, and prosecutors have now filed charges in the investigation.

Kelvin Bogan, 20, of Springfield, has been charged second-degree murder and armed criminal action, according to court records. He is being held at the Greene County Jail without bond.

Police notified the family of Darrell Gott, Jr. about Bogan’s arrest on Wednesday.

Investigators say Gott, 18, was shot on July 2, 2020. He died after getting shot and crashing his car into a parked van near North Clay and East Pacific.

According to court documents, police obtained data from Gott’s phone, and noticed conversations with people who appeared to be asking for drugs. At one point, police requested a warrant from Snapchat over conversations involving Gott.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A mass shooting in May rattled the North Charleston community. More than a dozen people were injured when shots rang out at a neighborhood dance party. Ronjanae Smith, 14, was shot and killed in the crossfire.

Shortly after the tragedy, Ronjanae’s father promised her death wouldn’t be forgotten. Just two months later, Ronald Smith is making good on that promise by launching a nonprofit organization in her honor.

The Positive Vibes center is going up at the corner of Reynolds and Rivers Avenue in the Chicora neighborhood of North Charleston. Smith gave ABC News 4 a look inside on Friday. The space is painted in bright colors, the main walls a soothing purple hue.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three people are facing charges after a murder in downtown Louisville last year.

Devon Robinson was at a bus stop when a group of people approached him and began to beat him, according to an arrest report. When Robinson attempted to run away, he was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital.

Kelvonnie Harris is one of the people facing charges in Robinson’s death. Harris is charged with murder in this case. He was already in jail for his alleged role in another murder in November 2020.LMPD confirmed two juveniles are also facing charges in Robinson’s death. Their names have not been released.

One of the juvenile suspects was arrested after a stand-off in the Park Hill neighborhood on July 14.

The other juvenile suspect was arrested July 16.

Devon Robinson was described by his brother as energetic and adventurous. His family held a vigil for him in Jefferson Square Park Sunday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In Jefferson Square Park on a rainy Sunday, family, friends and strangers huddled together to honor a young life lost.

On June 25, 19-year-old Devon Robinson was waiting at a bus stop at 5th and Liberty in downtown Louisville when he was shot around noon. He was on his way to his father's house at the time.

"It was heartbreaking because the whole time we were thinking he was on his way and really he was fighting for his life," Robinson's brother, Dominick Clayton said.

Clayton described his brother as energetic and adventurous. His family said he was a young man who cared about a lot of people.

"He was very helpful, especially with my dad. He loved my dad a lot," Clayton said.

Davon Taylor was in Jefferson Square Park the morning Robinson was shot. He said he heard about eight shots ring out a few blocks away and went to see what happened.

Taylor, who is also 19 years old, ultimately gave Robinson several rounds of CPR. He said Robinson regained consciousness for a few moments before he was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Even though they had been strangers until that moment, Taylor helped Robinson's family plan a vigil in his honor.

"We lost a brother in our reality so I'm treating this like this is somebody my family lost," Taylor said.

While Robinson's death wasn't related to the protests, the family said they wanted to hold his vigil in a space of peace.

"My family's strong. They might've taken out one of the toughest ones, but we're still strong. We'll get through this," Clayton said.

Together in Jefferson Square Park, the family said Sunday they will get justice for Robinson.

"He's not going to go and be nothing because he was somebody and he didn't deserve that," Marilyn Bonds, Robinson's grandmother, said.

LMPD said as of Sunday night, no one yet has been charged with murder in connection to his death.

Brooklyn Park isn't alone. Crystal has had similar incidents, including an incident where two men rolled out of a car fighting on a residential street one afternoon, and then started shooting each other.

"People think they can do whatever they want right now. I'm not sure why that is," said Crystal Police Chief Stephanie Revering.

"They think the police don't matter. I think people have been listening to anti-police rhetoric through the region, through the state and through the country, and just believe that their police department isn't legitimate," Enevoldsen said.

Enevoldsen and other suburban Twin Cities police chiefs are speaking out because as nationwide calls to reform police continue, violent crime is escalating, and needs to be addressed as well.

"We can have this conversation, too, along with all the other conversations that are happening around policing," said Plymouth Police Chief Erik Fadden. "But to know that we are pleading with the public right now to partner with us to just try to make their communities safer."

Fadden is fortunate to have received 200 tips in the recent high-profile shooting death of a youth baseball coach right on Highway 169.

Enevoldsen says community help solving crimes in Brooklyn Park has never been lower.

"People at the scene refuse to cooperate. Witnesses won't cooperate. We've had victims who are shot, and while we're tending to their injuries, asking their name and where they live, refusing to tell us that," Enevoldsen said.

Chief Revering believes people are afraid to call 911 and share what they know when these shootings happen.

Collectively, they are making a public plea for support to address the increase in violent crime as well as continuing reform

A shooting Monday morning in Wilkinsburg left one woman dead, according to Allegheny County Police.

Police received a 911 call just before 8 a.m. for a shooting on Princeton Boulevard, authorities said. Inside a home on the street, first responders found a 26-year-woman who had been shot.

The woman, who police did not identify, was dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact the county police tip lone at 1-833-255-8477.

Wlikinsburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and its population is 66.51% African American

I worked security during these riots. It was pure hell. Several black teenagers in a car pointed fingers, while using their thumbs as triggers, at me, staff had confrontations with one another where I had to escort them out, and more than a few racial incidents. Throw that on with the Covid stuff and it was all just awful.

Somehow Kapaernick's "Take a Knee" became a rallying call for pro-police and support the flag & troops, again ignoring Eric Garner, Breanna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray.

I have trouble with some of the names included in other lists - a 16-year-old wielding a knife isn't a victim; a juvie jumping a neighborhood watch guy isn't a victim. But others are for sure. And i found it repulsive to have a humane concern about treating humans with minimal respect pushed below the "need" to have profitable uncontroversial sports weekends, and mixed with the unrelated pseudo-patriotism of supporting our troops in meandering counterproductive foreign engagements where too many die or are wounded.

So yes, "defund the police" is unreasonable, but the new mayor of New York is talking both dealing with crime/shootings *AND* treating the general public including blacks with a needed amount of respect & human rights - obviously subject to emergencies like mass shootings where certain rights may be suspended. But until the left became unrealistic, the rest refused to budge - just another black death, ho-hum. And yes, it's frustrating that many of these activists don't spend enough energy on the current shootings etc al.
