MANHATTAN
A call girl working for alleged "Millionaire Madam" Anna Gristina told investigators she was paid to have sex with former U.S. Sen. John Edwards when he was in New York raising money for his failed presidential bid, DNAinfo has learned.

RIO DE JANEIRO — The attacks have stunned this city. In one, an assailant held a gun to the head of a 30-year-old woman while raping her in front of passengers on a bus as the driver proceeded down a main avenue. In another, a 14-year-old girl from a hillside slum was raped on one of Rio’s most famous stretches of beach.
In yet another case, men abducted and raped a working-class woman in a transit van as it wended through densely populated areas. The police failed to investigate, and a week later the same men raped a 21-year-old American student in the same van, pummeling her face and beating her male companion with a metal bar. [.....]...
Really good article at Daily Kos - precipitated by the Skagit River bridge collapse. I hope all the Daggers are having a good Memorial Day weekend - keep our fallen soldiers' sacrifice in your hearts.

For the cleric who runs Iran, there’s no such thing as a pleasant surprise, especially on election day. Ayatullah Ali Khamenei was not pleased when a librarian named Mohammed Khatami was swept into the President’s office in 1997, leading a wave of reformists who challenged the status quo in which Khamenei, as the unelected Supreme Leader of the Revolution, was most heavily invested. In every election cycle since, the self-appointed portion of Iran’s government has done all it can to winnow the choices placed before Iranian voters. On Tuesday, that system tightened the screen once more, ...

WASHINGTON — Bank lobbyists are not leaving it to lawmakers to draft legislation that softens financial regulations. Instead, the lobbyists are helping to write it themselves.
One bill that sailed through the House Financial Services Committee this month — over the objections of...

BEIJING — The Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, bluntly told a North Korean envoy Friday that his country should return to diplomatic talks designed to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons, according to a state-run Chinese news agency.
“The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and lasting peace on the peninsula is what the people want and also the trend of the times,” Mr. Xi said in a meeting at the Great Hall of the People with Vice Marshal Choe Ryong-hae, a personal envoy of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, the China News Service reported.
Vice Marshal Choe, who has been in Beijing for three days on a mission to...
Legalize it. Seriously.
I wonder what the populace believes are the negative issues to legalizing prostitution?
It would also be 'interesting' to know what the gender divide is, as well as the differing views/rationales (if any) of women/men on this issue.
Nick Kristof has been posting a lot about prostitution in third world countries.
Well, Aunt Sam, it's not hard to see why people would disagree with me and I have a lot of sympathy for the argument that very few people wind up working in prostitution because it was their life's ambition or because they enjoy it. My gut says that consenting adults can decide what they want to do with each other and if that involves $50 an oral sex, who am I to judge?
Donal mentions Kristoff and his human trafficking objection, which is entirely on point. But... would there be a human trafficking problem if prostitution was legal and regulated?
Beyond that, how is it okay to have a porn industry, where people are paid to have sex with each other and not a prostitution industry where, again, it's basically just people being paid for sex.
destor, I hate that prostitution is even part of our reality, but it is. And don't see how that's going to change any time soon. I say legalize it, tax it and enforce mandates for health checks, age, etc. It would (hopefully) do away with pimps and improves the odds of at least lessening the most vile abuses.
Just another example of trying as hard as possible to get that JFK persona down, yawn. What, you think artfully tossled haircuts alone would suffice?
BTW he says it's "false" and "defamatory"
and as that's a Guardian link, I'd say it's safe to say it's no longer just "in local news"
This John Edwards guy....he's the one who can tell you what your dead grandma's been up to?
Right?
Yes. If your grandma was hot.
Well played.
I think the news value here is minimal, partly because we already know that Edwards is a dog, and mostly because his political career is already over.
It is useful for historical perspective, to evaluate the depth of his risk-taking and hubris while he was still a viable contender for a major-party nomination.
