The officers suspended in the death will face charges of second degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and assault.
Freddie Gray was not carrying a switchblade. The knife he carried was legal. There was no reason to arrest Mr. Gray.

The Fraternal Order of Police Union:
They arrested him illegally, bound him up like a stuck pig, threw him the the floor of the van and went on a joy ride around town. SOP according to the union.
Gives unions a very bad image.
Even if not convicted on all counts, these indictments are like a 2 x 4 upside the head to the Baltimore PD, which has a long history of corruption.

Andrea Mitchell, during an interview with Rep. Elijia Cummings asked, "Congressman, the Fraternal Order of Police, the union representing the police, has called for a special prosecutor. What's your response to that?" His expression was priceless as he answered, "The police don't trust the prosecutor?"

That's classic
Cummings has been out nightly in his West Baltimore neighborhood trying to get people to obey the curfew and avoid conflict. He has frustrated Fox News reporters by not responding to there baited questioning. I watched some of Fox News' coverage last night night. The focus was on why the teens should not be called hoodlums. The questions raised by how Gray died were a side issue. They have been willing to speculate that Gray had a prior neck injury or that he injured himself, but they could not tolerate speculation that suggested the officers harmed Gray.
Protesters worked to isolate the Fox reporters because the sense was Fox was there with an agenda to stereotype the community, rather than supply the news.
Fox News' Todd Starnes tweeted his opinion that the prosecutor was conducting a war on the police.

Choice response. They can plead their case to the jury.
I was noting comments at the NYT on this with Bs like 'but the other prisoner said...', and I reviewed the NYT map on the stops of the police van, everyone please note and tell Faux types:
The other prisoner was not picked up until the 4th and last stop before the van was finally driven back to the station after it's circuitous roaming about town.
At that 4th stop Gray was already non-responsive..repeat, from NYT link above:
So all this crap from the WaPo and Fox News yesterday that the 'other prisoner' said "..yadayada' means squat as the mortal damage had already been done to Gray.

I hate using rush, but this sombitch actually said that we should focus on the fact that during prior arrests the cops did not kill this victim.

Freddie owed his life to them! He owed it!
Of course if his other arrests were for that pocket knife.....and the pocket knife was legal......then....maybe not.
I read a piece that police in Britain fired 3 bullets in all of 2014, didn't kill anyone, and that there were more police killings in Albuquerque NM last year than in the last 100 years in England.

NCD we have a culture of gunfire that has never been seen before.
I am not ignoring Syria or Iraq or Yemen or ....
But we live in a democracy--so to speak--where we are supposed to live without civil unrest, where we are supposed to live without revolution in play, where we are supposed to live as one of the great Western havens for chrissakes.
Did you read that for the third time in a week? they found guns in the Capitol rest room?
Right wing or left wing, there should not be free guns in the Capitol and yet some youngster found a gun?
Anyway, good point.
Thank you.

Would it be an egregious rush to judgment to conclude it was good the kid didn't play cops and robbers with Boehner, Baltimore style?

As expected one side of the power structure will rally around the troops while the politicos, under pressure, will quickly sacrifice a few of their tools of suppression to try to fool the rubes and sell the BS that the System still actually works for the people.
If we wait and pay attention and are not distracted by the next shiny object we will probably see that many of the 'troublemakers' , men and women will soon join their brothers and sisters in the Prison/Industrial Complex for long stays guaranteeing future profits for the Private Prison Industry but who really cares, they were thugs and hoodlums just waiting for this chance to destroy their neighborhood.
One thing is certain many of the people arrested during this outburst will have long been in prison before the trial of these cops even begins and even longer before any of these cops see the inside of a prison, if that ever happens.

Why do you keep doing this Peter thing?
Petreas we wish to hear from you.
Just speaking as a thug in the neighborhood of course.
hahahahah

Another shining example of how our system works was on display today. The cops charged with the murder or manslaughter of Freddie Gray had their bail set at between $250k and $350k and were quickly bailed out of jail. The young man who broke out a couple car windows and turned himself in in Baltimore had his bail set at $500k and will probably stay in jail.
The man who filmed the arrest of Freddie Gray and released it to the media was arrested at gunpoint for no apparent crime today and released a few hours later. He is a member of a copwatch group so we are already seeing the harassment and intimidation of activists and the uninterrupted suppression of the people in these neighborhoods, business as usual.

'Baltimore's Finest' at least didn't truss him up and take him for a rough ride, or choke hold him to death...... progress, American style.
Another plus, (whoopee) Wikipedia now had a Rough Rides (police practice) page complete with a history of those paralyzed or killed by the police practice.
by NCD on Sat, 05/02/2015 - 11:07am
The list is probably just a drop in the bucket. If I knew of the practice, then it is much more common then the list shows.

Certainly true. Even if these cops aren't convicted, the publicity over this case has to have some impact to reduce this heinous behavior by cops.

The police union attempted to raise money for the officers via GoFundMe, a crowdfunding website. It didn't work out too well.
by barefooted on Sat, 05/02/2015 - 6:31pm
It took them about 40 min. to take it down after it went up. It was a violation of their rules. You can't raise money for people who have broken the law.
