The Virginia legislature has passed a bill that will force women seeking an abortion to undergo a medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound. The mandated procedure requires that a woman's vagina be distended with a speculum and that a probe be inserted into the vagina and manipulated around so as to produce a high-resolution picture of the uterus and surrounding organs -- once again, for no medically sound reason. Governor Bob McDonnell has said that he will sign the bill. As part of the same package, the legislature also enacted a "personhood" law that would define life to begin at the stage of a fertilized egg, even before implantation, and hence would outlaw many forms of contraception and all abortions.

Mr. Wolff is a Professor of Constitution Law and Civil Procedure, University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Watch the poll numbers go up for Democrats in VA as this sinks into women's minds. This is something that will not stand up in the courts. This gives ammunition to the Democrats running in VA.

I found it hard to believe legislation this regressive could pass anywhere. But no, it appears to be the real deal. I'd love to see it signed into law so this turd can be dumped on the Supreme Court's doorstep. No way it survives.

The Republicans might as well require any woman seeking abortion to be emblazoned with a Scarlet Letter A on the forehead for a four week waiting period before any procedure.

I'm sure there is a lawsuit being prepared (ACLU for sure) and to be filed soon.

Of course, if it goes to SCOTUS, the current majority vote are old, right wing MEN, who will most likely uphold this abomination.

Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;

Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and

If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.
