    Embedding Youtube

A few of you have had trouble embedding youtube. Like some of you, I first tried to use the embed code from youtube. It didn't work for me, either. But I noticed that in the composing menu bar, to the far right is an icon (Insert/edit embedded media) that looks like two frames of film. Single-clicking that icon brings up a window. The first line in that window defaults to Type: Flash. Flash is right for youtube.

The second line is File/URL. I'm no expert on youtube, but I have noticed the following. When you watch a video on youtube, sometimes you read this as the URL:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbkSRLYSojo&feature=player_embedded

and sometimes you only read this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbkSRLYSojo

I've noticed that the ampersand and anything after it can be included or deleted for embedding, but you can't leave part of the text after the ampersand. If you do, you will see a box in edit mode, but nothing in preview.

The third line is Dimensions. This particular video lists 540 x 340, and larger values, on its youtube page, but just defaulted to 425 x 350. A width of 425 seems to fit well on my screens, but the 540 x 340 seems to be a better proportion. I've never had to constrain the proportions.

    Donal, thanks. Very helpful.

    Thank you for this.

Thanks but nothing worked for me.  The youtube will show up in preview but disappears when I save.

Can you try one in response to this comment? Perhaps I or one of the folk here can figure it out.

    I could see that.

Que?  Je ne sais pas ce que voulez dire vous.

Are you saying you can see my embedded video?

Yup. Haaaaalelujah in the food court. Maybe your flash is messed up locally.

I can see videos embedded by others but not my own.  How strange is that?

Maybe your OS still has the older version assigned to Flash extensions, while the browser is using the newer version as an plugin, or vice versa.

    Thanks for the help.

I've done all the usual things, uninstall, reinstall, restart browser, restart computer, etc.  I am hesitant to do anything else unless the problem shows up on other websites.  At present it seems to be only dagblog-related.

This may be a good excuse to download Chrome.  Maybe.  I burned out on upgrading sometime in the late 90s/early 00s after going from an Apple II+ through practically every PC iteration that followed, including every OS and Office Suite from DOS to XP.

    SYL

I've been ecstatically pleased with Linux. I switched sometime this summer.

As much as I would like to try something that has gotten so much praise from the technically savvy, I have stayed with Microsoft and Windows because it is* what is used most by the types of businesses I work with.  Early Apples were always more intuitive than PCs but the deciders in my world chose PCs with DOS then Windows.

Question for a mastheader:  Is there a way to embed a poll in a post here?

I can only embed videos with Firefox, and sometimes can't even ssee them when I use my Qwest IE, and have to be careful not to edit through that, either, or the video disappears.

I like the smaller versions if I use them in someone else's thread, so I click the Disable Rich Text thingie, paste in the embed code, then change the sizes to 325 X 200 (close enough to half of 385 on most videos), Enable Rich Text, then preview.  The other night I had fits embedding the John Lennon videos; only one at a time would load, and that night I couldn't get the Embedding to work.

Like this: here's the embed code for one of my faves.  (I've also found that usually if i let the ad play and a bit of the video, I can press the Go Back arrow, click on the video again, and the ad won't play again.

    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kKkxXaeAhzY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kKkxXaeAhzY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

So i'm going to change the 640 x 385 to 320 x 200 in both places now after disabling rich text:

Then press Preview; it should show up; then click Save.

And to complicate mattters, I've never been able to embed a video in a diary at FDL; the site administrator usually has my back.  ;o)  It's getting to be a standing joke there, my being a tech ignoramus.  Different system than this, though close.  Beats me.

Emma, can you see mine?  And have you tried Firefox?  It's a free download, but only get the one from their site, not whatch-call-its.

    Yes.  I see your embed.

I would like to believe that we can disagree on the boards and still help one another out; being polite can grease the gears of a fractured community machine.

Sorry if I seemed rude.  Today I tried something not exactly new but something I do not often do.  I attempted to communicate but ended up thinking about too many things at once then I got tired.

    Thanks for the Firefox tip.

    Good enough.  ;o)

FWIW, I updated flash this am to latest iteration.

I have the latest version of Flash, but I can't view Emma's video either. I can view what Donal has posted. Despite pledging here a year ago to kick the habit, I'm still on Internet Explorer. I block pop-ups, but that normally doesn't affect YouTube videos. Puzzling.

Emma's embed and my embed below use identical html:

    "<p><object data="http://www.youtube.com/v/SXh7JR9oKVE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="350" width="425"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SXh7JR9oKVE"></object></p>"

Can Emma and Acunuck see this?

My embed from the main post included an additional tag:

    "<p><object data="http://www.youtube.com/v/jbkSRLYSojo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="350" width="425"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jbkSRLYSojo"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jbkSRLYSojo"></object></p>"

Perhaps some bright person can tell us whether the extra param valuetype tag in my embed html is making the video more visible to some users.

    I can see it.

I found that my IE default privacy settings are restricting blocking youtubes here.  I assume the settings are default because I've never really bothered with them except to input allowed sites whenever I experienced a problem.  Allowing did not help with this.  I've tinkered with the settings overnight even setting no restrictions at all but nothing so far works.

Well, I'm flummoxed that we can use identical html but get different results based on who posts it.

I can view it too. Nice clip, by the way.
