The Vatican Issues a Special Message in Honor of International Women's Day: Ladies, Love your Maytag

There is a vast amount of stupidity in this world and an even vaster amount of self-righteous and willful ignorance. So, congratulations to the Vatican for releasing perhaps the most monumentally ridiculous statement of the decade. With Republicans running amok, that is some accomplishment. Says the (all male) Vatican:

Nothing has contributed more to the emancipation of women than the washing machine.

Around the World in 80 Songs: Argentina

When you think about music and Argentina, do you immediately think tango?

You’re not alone. Argentina is known for unleashing the sexy style on the world in the early twentieth century. Over almost a hundred years, the tango has been an obsession of many, even leading to an explosion of tango-themed vacation tours.

    Stumble Stumble

StumbleUpon is a search engine of sorts that works on the "let what you're looking for find you" principle. It takes Google's "I feel lucky" concept to new heights. Instead of typing in what you're searching for, you just click the big "Stumble" button, and the site serves up pages that it thinks you want to see.

    Happy Weekend!! ...

This is a fun chart to look at - thanks to http://dshort.com. Assuming this market meltdown proves to be a reasonable fascimilie of the big, bad one, as I believe it will, we have a long way down yet to go.

We are so overdue for a decent-sized short-term relief rally, I think we may get one as soon as next week, but I bet when all is said and done we get much closer to that down 89% total.

MOFT: Episode 9 (Blue Diamond 'BOLD' Almonds)

It was a tough battle for the My One Favorite Thing award this week, with some noteworthy candidates. Certainly, jilted bachelorette Melissa Rycroft, who was forced to undergo a breakup on national TV a  mere six weeks after being proposed to on national TV (live by the reality show sword, die by the sword, I guess) was a top runner-up.

Could an economic depression make us less depressed?

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
    Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

I don't know many very happy people. I know people who are content enough, I suppose. I know plenty of people who do a decent job at hiding their discontent. (As for myself, I'm probably somewhere in between those two categories, leaning toward the former).

The dagbuzz for 3/3/09: (Fallon's Poor Debut and The Bachelor's Stunning End)

If you've been following my blogging at all, you know how little shame I have. In today's dagbuzz, I take the shamelessness to a whole new level by admitting I got emotionally involved with this past season of The Bachelor, which ended last night in spectacular fashion. It is so very very wrong that I think I may have gotten myself more worked up over what Jason did to Melissa last night than anything AIG, Madoff, Thain or Rush have done during the past year.
