This is where things stand in the United States Congress
Some Republicans refuse to pass through metal detectors
A subset of Republicans want to be able to carry weapons on the floor of Congress
Comments
As noted elsewhere Republicans also fear for their lives

With that you just posted more evidence of the split in the Republican party that others have argued here that journalists are just imagining.
Just because they didn't vote for impeachment out of fear for their lives doesn't mean they haven't changed their mind about supporting Trumpism and all it means in results on the entire electorate.
If everyone keeps trying to reinforce the red vs. blue lines that are really not there anymore and then follow up with the "you are all culpable" thing, they cannot be divided and conquered . The continued willingness to stoke imaginary blue v. red dichotomy gets us nowhere as a country. Those who do that on the Democratic side of the aisle are actually the mirror equivalent of Ted Cruz.
Joe Biden's way is the way to weaken or at least moderate the Republican party. If Biden pushes too far left on too many things, though, things that the majority electorate don't support, especially on culture wars issues, the righties will stoke the divide again for electoral benefit.
I would ask: what do you want, a healthy country, or to continue to stoke a partisan divide because of what "the always evil Republicans" did in the past?
by artappraiser on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 2:33pm
Your faith in common sense is your most endearing quality how ever much it's misplaced. If Biden puts one toe on the left side of the center line the republicans and the conservative pundits will call it radical socialism and the morons that follow them will believe it.

What I see is worldwide pandemic and economic consequences with effects on the world no less than the Black Death caused in the mid 1300's. Things will not be as they were before, things have changed. Everybody still has had their head in the sand about that distracted by Trump (and BLM all summer was no small distraction either; worldwide, perhaps more than Trump effect, especially among the elite who could have been putting their minds elsewhere). Seeing Republicans agitate for $2,000 checks to the entire populace and extended unemployment insurance is just a teensy start of awareness of what has happened. In this case what I am sure of is that the past is not prologue. You can't judge where the parties are going to go, at all, especially after Jan. 6. There may be a lot more Independents coming, if the Cruz types keep plying their crap, especially in the Senate. I think thinking politics are going to return to how they were since 1994 Gingrich revolution is just hoping for a return to normal, and that's not going to happen.
The return to normal is not going to happen partly because boomers are dying. A major part of change will involve young voters who don't know from "normal". Try to put yourself in the mindset of a person whose whole life has been upset by lockdown, i.e., and all that entails, with no perspective of age. No socializing in reality, no travel, little work, political upheaval everywhere, etc. It's going to be a different world. I don't see how the same paradigms can even exist anymore in the next decade. Everyone's pretending right now that there's not this elephant in the room. (It's comforting to think you have the same old enemies and can return to the same fights.)
Maybe we will return to the old paradigms eventually, but certainly not for a decade.
I.E., on just one thing: there certainly will be more xenophobia from many as certain countries get corona under control and others do not.

you do not like complex thoughts do you, always returning to the simplistic, either no awareness of or a denial of the complexity of human motives?
why do you even say something like that? It's just preaching to the choir crap. THINK ABOUT THIS: I myself am an Independent, and your preachy garbage really really turns me off. You have to convince people EXACTLY LIKE ME to be politically successful, and all you do is either attack or turn me off.
Why do you do that? What is it getting you? Except drawing trolls like Jeff Unverifed.

Things going on in the real world

Everyone can play that game: And some Democrats took a knee in Congress for a photo op in support of BLM when the official BLM was supporting "defund the police" and Mitt Romney marched in a BLM protest for a photo op even though rioting and looting associated with the protests had occurred.
Not all Republicans are supporters of Trump. Furthermore the stormers of the Capitol were not all of the Trumpists!
Failing to admit to the complexity of the situation is simply playing into the red vs. blue divide, when in reality there is lots of purple out there (especially among Hispanics, we are finding out lately.)

Questioning whether members of Congress aided an attack on the Capitol is a totally different matter.
by rmrd0000 on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 4:46pm
I know, I'm the one who created a news thread on that and am keeping it up.
And before that, the thread on Ali Alexander which is related.
You don't show any interest in such complexities, rather, you'd just like to whine about "Republicans" being the cause of it all.
Oh look, Ali Alexander is black! Does that mean all blacks are pro-Trump seditionists? No! Are all Republicans seditionists? No.
by artappraiser on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 5:04pm
The argument was never that every single Republican was involved.
The post is about the distrust that some Democrats have for some Republicans in Congress
I did a separate post to avoid being accused of hijacking one of your posts.
You decided that you wanted to discuss the Black Death on my post.
Out in the real world Pelosi is conducting a House investigation on the attack
Members of Congress are speaking out about their concerns.
I feel relieved
Regarding Ali Alexander, Zora Neal Hurston made the observation "All my skinfolk are not my kinfolk"
Good words to live by.
I viewed Glenn Loury's most recent podcast.
Loury mentions that three books turned him away from movement Conservatism, "The Bell Curve", "The End of Racism", and "America in Black and White: One Nation, Indivisible"
Loury voted for Obama
Loury's vote has as much to do with my post as Ali Alexander and the Black Death.
As is the case with Jeff, your posts do not unnerve or distract me.

So 7 years with massive deaths, while Covid has a good chance of being contained by end of year 2 with maximum say 5 million deaths? (2 million now)
by PeraclesPlease on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 3:47pm
I am starting to go with more like 5 years, not 2. Israel is on the path to becoming a world leader but if you thought they were into keeping their society pure, just wait, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Plus even two years lost is a devastating thing in a young person's life, it will change them in ways we can't imagine yet. Enormous ramifications.
by artappraiser on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 4:14pm
3 vaccines rolling out 1 year in - not sure why you think it'll last 4 more years. And again, the Black Death had a much much higher death rate. Sure, 2 years is an effect, but not quite comparable to 7 of total death & devastation, wiping out 1/3 the population.
by PeraclesPlease on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 4:36pm
we don't have ANY vaccines right now, PP. It's all pie in the sky bullshit. Many countries are in the same position. some of it corporate bullshit to raise stock prices, some of it government incompetence.I say that with hopes that Biden can rustle up some world leadership and attack this like the world war it really is. Otherwise it's gonna be 5 years as one country re-infects another with this or that mutant or variant.
It's not that hard to understand, if you don't take your full course of antibiotics all you do is breed new and stronger bacteria. The world has to take a full course. Vaccination in mass quantities all at once or it's gonna be more like 5 years. Produce it in mass quantites and put it in the arms of WHOEVER WANTS IT, FUCK THE SOCIAL ENGINEERING STUPIDITY of trying to force minorities who are scared of it to take it first, how ridiculous that was, even stupido social engineer DeBlasio has rejected that scenario. Whoever wants it, get it made and get it in their arms.Fast fast track for Johnson & Johnson, get it off the ground takes months...

Democrats in Congress are openly saying that they feel threatened by Republicans in Congress
Democrats think Republicans gave aid and comfort to the insurrectionists
Democrats wonder if some of the Republicans in Congress are seditionists
Democrats and their were infected with COVID by Republicans who refused to wear masks
Many Republicans refuse to acknowledge Biden as the lawful President-elect
The Republicans have to alter their behavior

A sign of the times, Roxane Gay purchased guns for protection
https://www.theroot.com/to-protect-herself-against-white-supremacy-roxane-gay-1846067559
by rmrd0000 on Fri, 01/15/2021 - 11:23pm
It's the myth of guns as immediate and automatic protection. Like a gun is a magic wand. I don't care that she bought a gun but the odds of it doing any good are small and it's more likely to cause harm. The odds of a home invasion are extremely small and even if she decides to open carry every where she goes the odds of being accosted on the street are equally small. She'll probably never need that gun but let's say she does. A gun is not a talisman that produces an aura of protection when it's pulled out and pointed. She'll at the very least need to engage in regular practice drawing and shooting to feel comfortable with her gun. But no matter how many targets she shoots it's different when it comes to shooting a person. I and most people I know experience some reluctance killing deer, rabbits, or wild pigs for food.Hunting is a choice you make for food that you have to get used to. I'm sure that decision to put a bullet in a human being is even more difficult. The person you'd be confronting is likely comfortable with guns and violence already. It's probably not his first time. Just having a gun to match his doesn't level the playing field
So the odds of ever needing a gun are small. The odds of using it successfully in the heat of the moment if you every need to are small. What is more likely is someone in her family will use the gun to commit suicide, or someone showing off will kill a relative at a party, or some child will find it and kill someone while playing with it.
by ocean-kat on Sat, 01/16/2021 - 10:33am
Gay's purchase reflects her personal fear. I expect gun purchases by people who never considered guns before will increase. We knew "The Squad" received threats, We now have video of a lone DC black police officer chased by a white mob. The attack on the Capitol will likely increase gun purchases.
Gun purchases were already increasing in the Black community
https://www.blackenterprise.com/black-americans-now-account-for-the-highest-increase-in-gun-sales-of-any-demographic/
I doubt people do a statistical analysis prior to purchasing a gun. I live in a city and feel no need to purchase a gun. Roxane Gay is well known, and may have a different level of personal concern.
by rmrd0000 on Sat, 01/16/2021 - 11:05am
That is a great short summary of the risks, responsibilities, huge downsides and tenuous benefits of buying and carrying a gun for protection. Pulling a gun raises the stakes of any confrontation, that may have been avoided, diffused or ended by talking ones way of of it. Plus all the deficiencies mentioned.
In advertising she got a gun, implying it may help to "solve white people", she is not doing whites or blacks, or nonviolence promotion, any favors, she is just boosting profits of gun manufacturers, and the false belief guns make you safer. It would seem the goal is typical 'wow!' cheap publicity seeking.
"Kill him with his own gun" the mob demanded, as the Capitol cop was at their mercy. He then talked his way out of it.
by NCD on Sat, 01/16/2021 - 11:47am
It's also one more gun in the U.S. We lead the world here: Estimated number of civilian guns per capita by country. People die (by whatever means), their guns still live on in other hands. Often irrrational or criminal hands. Unless trends somehow turn drastically towards a major meltdown program, we are doomed to gun violence like forever with this trend. Even "gun control" cannot help that much in this situation. It's way easy to go illegal black market, especially if you already have one.
